NC leadership using 'media' to reach out to 'government' run by party….?
'Distance widening between cadres, ruling elite'

JAMMU, Aug 8: It sounds ironical that those in power should make media as 'medium' to reach out to the power corridors to voice out their concerns on issues concerning people or a region in particular. The plight of workers and even middle rung cadres is common with almost all the parties in Indian polity but here in J&K it reflects pathetic state of affairs when the leaders of the ruling NC choose to take media help to make their own government listen and understand what public wants from them.
This may be true of both the alliance partners in J&K coalition government Congress as well as NC that workers and even leaders of senior hierarchy feel quite distanced from those at the helm , having no access to those who matter in matters of governance and in settling the issues of the people . But ruling in NC the problem is more acute notwithstanding the fact the Chief Minister is from their party and most of ministers from this party hold key portfolios in the government. Sources say workers and middle rung rung feel alienated and pushed aside and there is no say nor any direct access to government quarters . The distance and gulf between workers and high command appears to have widened perhaps more than what it was earlier, sources said adding that the grouse is being nourished by them in both the regions.
It was in Jammu the other day that the provincial leadership chose to take up demands related to region and people in general in a meeting which was convened in party headquarters . In the meeting leadership 'urged' the state government to take up new tourism circuits that would help create job avenues for the unemployed youth of the state. Even as highlighting of this demand along with other youth oriented issues in the meeting may be considered as serving the twin purpose of addressing the political constituency and at the same time reminding the government the priority areas which have hitherto remained untouched at least in Jammu region, appealing and urging the government makes it rather ridiculous on part of the political party which runs the show.
And even more ridiculous sounds the fact that on the same forum the provincial leadership chooses to highlight the 'achievements' of the coalition government led by Omar Abdullah. However, as for highlighting the demand of developing tourism circuits in Jammu is concerned, the NC leadership has only done a small service to the political base in this region where neither Congress nor this party has yet addressed the issues that remained poll promises in last elections.
In Kashmir valley where NC has far more MLAs and ministers in comparison to Jammu region, the workers feel disappointed and choked on many counts. Sources say the gap has widened not only between the workers, cadres and the top leadership but the rapport and bond of communication which used to be there with the elected representatives while the party was opposition has also weakened considerably. The elections to the Panchayats has also compounded this problem as the party MLAs have started feeling 'insecure' and uncomfortable particularly in the areas where NC patronized candidates have not performed. It would augur well both for top leadership and middle rung cadres as well as the workers if government pays some heed or else there is no scope for common people to expect 'anything' from the present dispensation.
