Pilgrim rush drops for annual Amarnath yatra | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 9: With just four days left for conclusion of 46-day-long annual pilgrimage to holy Amarnath cave in south Kashmir, the number of Yatris had dropped considerably as only 744 pilgrims today left Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camp for the shrine. This was the sharp contrast as compared to first four weeks, when more than 20000 pilgrims were visiting the shrine daily. The heavy rush of pilgrims, majority of them unregistered, had resulted in early melting of the self made Ice-Shivlingam in the cave shrine, situated at 13500 feet. The pilgrimage will conclude on August 13, the Rakshabandan day. Yatra officials said a fresh batch of 520 pilgrims left through shortest Baltal track this morning while 224 Yatris left from Nunwan Pahalgam base camp. As per the Meteorological Department’s forecast from today to August 12, there is a possibility of light rain or thundershowers today and on August 12 and the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy on August 11 in the Kashmir Division. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, (SASB) R K Goyal has once again advised all Yatris to ascertain the obtaining weather conditions in the yatra area before embarking on the pilgrimage. The details of weather forecast are available on the website of the Indian Meteorological Department, at (www.amssdelhi.gov.in). CEO also urged all intending pilgrims to have themselves medically examined and no one with an orthopedic problem, chest or lung ailment or any cardiac deficiency should venture to undertake the arduous yatra, involving trekking upto 14,000 feet.
