Rs. 3.22 cr to boost Saffron cultivation in Jammu Division

JAMMU, Aug 9:

An amount of Rs 3.22 crore will be utilized for boosting saffron cultivation in district Kishtwar during the current financial year.
This was revealed by Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir while inaugurating 2-day training programme on production of quality Saffron under National Mission on Saffron- Economical Revival under Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Yojna in the Directorate of Agriculture, Jammu.
As many as, 80 progressive farmers hailing from Kishtwar and other temperate areas of Jammu Division besides officers of the Agriculture Department from all the districts are participating in the programme.
The Minister said that the State Government is taking measures to improve the quality and productivity of Saffron cultivation. He said that service provider are proposed to be appointed to assist the farmers in adopting organic cultivation, practices and in marketing the saffron produce of the area so that the farmers are able to get a better price for the Saffron produced by them. He directed the officers of the Department to leave no stone unturned to improve the income levels of the farming community in the State. He further advised the farmers to not only use improved agricultural practices to increase production but focus on improving the quality as well.
Earlier, Director Agriculture, Jammu, Ajay Khajuria disclosed that there are about 4975 families engaged in Saffron cultivation in Kishtwar, where 300 hects (approx) of Saffron land is being brought under Saffron cultivation. He further said that the main emphasis is being given on rejuvenation of saffron cultivating area, development of irrigation infrastructure, providing machinery and equipment for quality improvement such as dryers, weeders besides development of nursery at the Saffron Development Farm Beerwar. Similar potential also exists in the non-traditional temperate areas of other districts in the division like Palmar, Basantgarh, Mahore, Budhal etc.
