Rubbish litters Katra as safaikaramcharis go on strike | | | AJAY SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT KATRA, Aug 09: A flash strike by the safakaramcharis today made this holy township untidy with rubbish littered all over. With polythene bags, rubbish and garbage scattered in the main market here, the town looked like a garbage dump. People, especially Vaishnodevi pilgrims, had a tough time as foul smell kept emanating from every corner here. The safaikaramcharis, who were agitated over the seizure of a Katra municipal committee (KMC) vehicle by police, held meetings and protests, and expressed their anguish over the incident. Official sources said in a meeting of KMC, shrine board and civil administration held last week, it was decided that garbage would not be thrown in the open. The meeting was also attended by Katra MLA Baldev Raj Sharma. Police, however, seized a KMC vehicle two days back when the rubbish was being allegedly thrown from it in the open. This made the safaikaramcharis angry and they today resorted to flash strike. The civil administration and police held a meeting with them in the evening and resolved the issue amicably. Sources said the safaikaramcharis had agreed to resume their duties from tomorrow.
