Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 9: After August 9, 1953 incident, Sher-e-Kashmir did change but not fully. He continued to nurture separatist tendencies. He even flirted with the idea of a guerrilla war for liberation of Jammu Kashmir.
After 1965 war when Pakistan President, General Ayoub Khan and his foreign ministry officials including late Zulifkar Ali Bhuttoo shifted the blame for the failure of Operation Gibraltar on the people of Kashmir, Mir came out openly to defend the hapless Kashmiris.
In a meeting with Shabir Chowdhury at his Rawalpindi residence, immediately after the war, Mir said, "When Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah visited Pakistan in 1964, he discussed a possibility of guerrilla war in Kashmir, and Pakistan's support for it. He was disappointed with the response of the Pakistani authorities. When he returned back from Hajj he was arrested by India and once again put behind the bars. When Pakistan started the 'Operation Gibraltar' in 1965, he was still in jail and must have been astonished to hear about 'guerrilla war', if it can be called so."
Sher-e-Kashmir, it may be mentioned went to Pakistan as an emissary of Jawahar Lal Nehru. He was on a special mission to find a solution to the vexed Kashmir problem. But, according to Mir, he betrayed his `friend' Nehru by talking about a guerrilla war. Any ways, the mission could not be accomplished as Nehru passed away while Sheikh was still in Pakistan. He had to cut short his visit to attend the funeral of his `friend'. Nehru's successor, Lal Bahadur Shastri proved a hard nut. He not only ignored Sheikh but ordered his arrest after his return from Hajj.
The August 9 incident, senior NC workers believe had a serious impact on Sher-e-Kashmir's psyche. He continued to hate Congress and crossed all limits in early 70s by enforcing social boycott of the Congress workers. The Congress workers and their families suffered a lot during that period. In fact they were virtually isolated. Even people refrained from attending their funeral prayers. He called them Gundhi Nali Kay Keeday (insects of the gutter).
