Third arrest in Sopore custodial killing | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 10: It is separately a matter of investigation whether scapegoats are being implicated or the Special Investigating Team (SIT) is laying hands on the real actors but, as of now, the day's news is that the third arrest has taken place in the investigation of a custodial killing in Sopore. Authoritative sources told Early Times that the SIT today took into custody Head Constable Janak Raj (No: 708/JKAP 7th Bn) during the course of the investigation into the custodial death of 28-year-old Nazim Rashid Shala of Krankshivan Colony, Sopore. Janak Raj was allegedly one of the SOG personnel who participated in the custodial interrogation of the civilian on July 30th. During the night intervening, detained Nazim Rashid had died in custody of SOG Sopore. As already reported, Nazim Rashid had been picked up by Police for his alleged involvement in the assassination of his neighbour and friend, Mohammad Ashraf Dar, who had been gunned down by suspected militants late in the evening on July 26th. During the course of investigation, Police observed that a number of telephonic conversations had taken place between Nazim Rashid, a local Major of Rashtriya Rifles 52 Bn and Mohammad Ashraf Dar, minutes before Dar was gunned down in the locality. According to exclusive disclosures available with this newspaper, Nazim Rashid had revealed to his interrogators, albeit under third degree torture, that he had accompanied top wanted Lashkar-e-Tayyiba militant, Bilal Ahmed Dar alias Huzaifa, when Ashraf Dar was gunned down on July 26th and another civilian, namely Shamsuddin Mir alias Jana Mir was eliminated a couple of months back. Nazim had identified Bilal Dar's brother, Shaban, as the man who had been issuing "death warrants" and ordering killing of soft targets in Sopore. Taking serious note of the custodial death, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had made it clear on Twitter that there would be tough and immediate action. In immediate follow up, head of the SOG Sopore, Dy SP Ashiq Hussain Tak, was attached to District Police Office and three SOG personnel were placed under suspension. Police filed a murder case and constituted a SIT, supervised by DIG North Kashmir Munir Khan. Government simultaneously ordered a magisterial inquiry, being conducted by SDM Sopore, Mohammad Ahsan Mir. After taking certain actions, Government subsequently ordered transfer of SP Sopore, Altaf Khan, to an IRP battalion and he was immediately replaced by SP Ganderbal, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir. |
