Mysterious disappearance of two Paddar girls | One year on, Police clueless, locals regret 'unconcerned' response from govt | | Asif Iqbal Naik kishtwar, Aug 11: Even after lapse of more than one year, Kishtwar police fails to find any clue about mysterious disappearance of two teenage girls from Paddar Tehsil of District Kishtwar. The girls Sapna Devi daughter of Nand Lal and Sangeeta Devi daughter of Janki Nath both residents of Gulabgarh Paddar were picked up by the police along with a youth Pardeep Kumar son of Amar Chand of Gulabgarh Paddar from Maharaja Gulab Singh Qilla (Fort) located at Gulabgarh on July 12, 2010. According to Pardeep Kumar, cousin brother of the missing girls police picked him up along with two girls in the evening of July 12, 2010 at 6:30 p.m when the trio was sitting on Sangam of Chanderbhaga and Bhoot Nallah on the outskirts of Gulabgarh. However, after the incident came to fore, local people vandalized the police station Gulabgarh. The senior police officers from Kishtwar and Jammu along with Divisional Commissioner Jammu, IG Jammu, DIG Doda-Kishtwar and Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar were held hostage by the protesting people for more the 3 hours and after hectic efforts with the help of the members of the civil society, all the officers were set free by the people, but despite the promises made by the senior administrative officers, nothing has been done till date as far as finding the whereabouts of the two teenage girls is concerned. Local people allege indifferent attitude on behalf of the state government and accuse Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for adopting biased attitude in treating human tragedies of two regions with respect to the people of Jammu region particularly towards the efforts of the state government as far as recovery of the two teenage girls missing from Padder who belongs from lower caste. "Our Chief Minister Omar's step to call Navy divers from Delhi to search out the body of a Kashmiri medical student Syed Zuhaib Rizvi from Mansar lake was a good decision, but at the same time, he (Omar) showed biased approach while dealing with similar human tragedies in Padder Tehsil of Kishtwar district in Jammu province," said Sunil Kumar of Padder. Sunil Kumar further said that on the request of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the center government sends the team of 6 Navy divers to Mansar lake, so as to search the dead body of Kashmiri boy. On the contrary, there is no response to similar tragedies that happened in Padder. Another youth Manoj Kumar said that two girls of minority community were reported to have drowned, or jumped into Chenab River at Paddar in Kishtwar under similar circumstances, but governments at the helm never deemed it proper nor ever though to engage Navy divers for their search as well. "This shows that Omar was biased towards Jammu in dealing with the incidents of human sufferings" Manoj Kumar lamented. Both the girls Sapna Devi and Sangeeta Devi are suspected to have jumped into Chenab on the fateful day of July 12 last year after their footwear and other belongings were found lying on the bank of river bank at Paddar. As they were alleged to have ended their lives following their humiliation by police, Paddar witnessed violent protests with locals attacking the police station and cops. The anger and resentment , has pacified with passage of time. But people regret government inaction and unconcerned attitude of the government towards the progress of investigations into the case. People feel that the NC led government ought to have shown the same concern in the case of the two missing girls. "Omar is chief minister of the whole state and not for Kashmir region only. He should take interest in the Paddar incident too so that the bodies of the missing girls, who belonged to poor families, were also recovered," said another youth Neeraj Kumar. |
