What does Govt want to convey by the way? | ID function without children | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: The government has once again bowed before the separatists. Their appeal to keep children away from August 15 and January 26 functions for the past two decades was never heeded. But today when the government claims a favourable turn in the security situation, the administration has decided not to invite schools children for cultural programmes on Independence Day. A local news agency quoting official sources circulated the news two days ago. The news was carried by some local newspapers from Jammu as well as from Srinagar. The function at Bakshi Stadium on August 15 is going to be a `total sarkari affair'. The decision of the authorities is going to convey wrong signals at the national level while the separatists will sell it internationally. The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah must own the `credit' for appeasing the separatists. The participation of school children, it may be mentioned, was always resented by separatist elements. However, Sher-e-Kashmir ensured lively functions in Bakshi Stadium on both the National Festivals. During his times, the functions would take more than three hours to end. Similarly Dr Farooq Abdullah also took measures to keep the stadium lively on August 15. Omar Abdullah, it seems, wants to convey a message. On Monday (Independence Day) men in uniform will perform to galleries filled by government employees. The world will come to know that Kashmiris do not participate in the celebrations. This is exactly what the separatist camp wants. They have urged the people to observe August 15 as `black day'. They have also called for general strike. While concerned quarters are seeking an explanation from the administration to justify the decision of keeping schools away from the function, the separatist camp is happy. "We have achieved the goal without actually doing anything", a Hurriyat activist said. |
