Interlocutors sought justice for Early Times, Union Home Ministry still silent | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: Whether or not Union Ministry of Home Affairs would take report of controversial interlocutors seriously can be gauged from the fact that despite being apprised of official penalization of Early Times by one of the interlocutors, the ministry has seemingly turned a deaf ear. No inquiry has been ordered nor has the state government been asked to explain reasons for putting up family of owners of Early Times newspaper to unparalleled troubles. The only grave mistake for which the institution was penalized was the principled stand that Early Times always took against the administrative and official nepotism. One of the interlocutors who twice met the team of Early Times led by its editor on the first occasion assured of taking up the issue with Union Ministry of Home Affairs and on the second occasion, stated that he apprised the Home Minister P. Chidambram of the problems which the Early Times newspaper had been facing. He even went to the extent of saying that union home ministry has assured of taking up issue with state government. Interlocutor's word were like music in the ears of the Early Times team but months after the meeting, Early Times is waiting to see ice melting on ground but nothing of that sought is happening. This raises two questions. One with regard to how seriously centre is taking these interlocutors and other, how concerned is union home ministry about strengthening the nationalist media in Jammu and Kashmir. Early Times is publishing its edition from Jammu without fear and its every issue brings to light the administrative and political shortcomings wherever they are in the state set-up. Expectations were that union home ministry would seek an explanation from the state government and even go to the extent of ordering an inquiry on its own. But it seems that impact of interlocutors has been negligible. They have either been unable to make an impact on the union home ministry or that the ministry is not taking them seriously. Early Times is waiting to see how seriously the ministry takes it and whether or not a probe will be ordered at the earliest. Our victimization has so far gone unheard and culprits are still roaming out in open. We had intimated the ministry that we do not want compensation but an explanation for the manner in which our voice was muzzled, our independence torn apart, our dignity tarnished and our institution damaged. To that particular interlocutor, we had spoken our heart out and pleaded for seeking answers from the state government for penalizing us for running a newspaper which is fearless and does not toe the official line. |
