Resolve groupism in the interest of peace | | | It is mess everywhere.Mess in the three mainstream political parties, especially the Congress, the National Conference and the BJP,in Jammu and Kashmir.Mess in the separatist camps, whether it is the one headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani,or the other headed by Molvi Umar Farooq. As a result of this mess unity among separatist organisations has not materialised despite bids made by the moderates. One is amazed of the mess in the state unit of the BJP.If there is confusion and conflict among leaders belonging to the Congress and National Conference there is nothing new about it.Even during the time the redoubtable Sheikh Abdullah headed the National Conference dissensions surfaced from time to time.First it was a sort of a revolt that the Sheikh's lieutanant,Mirza Afzal Beg had staged sometime in 1979 when he fielded his son-in-law against a party candidate for the Legislative Council election.Beg was thrown out of the party and he floated Inquilabi National Conference which failed to make any major dent to the National Conference.Similarly whether the state unit of the Congress was headed by Mufti Sayeed,or Ghulam Rasool Kar or Mohd.Shafi Qureshi the party continued to be plagued by dissensions. But such a problem would not exist in the BJP or the saffron brigade. There used to be voices that were critical of the functioning of Thakur Baldev Singh,Rishi Kumar Kaushal or even Prof.Chaman Lal Gupta but whenever the situation demanded the BJP leaders, alongwith the entire saffron brigade, demonstrated unity. The era of unity in the BJP seems to have become a page in the history of the state after seven MLAs are alleged to have indulged in cross voting during the Legislative Council election held in April last. The Party high command was so much peeved over the episode that it expelled Prof. Gupta from the party and supended six others.Since then there is no let up in the mudslinging exercise among the leaders.A stage has come when the suspended legislators have begun attacking the party leadership right and left. Some of them have challenged the action in the court. This way the unity facade, for which the sangh parivar has been known, seems to have been shattered in Jammu and Kashmir. Though there are some rumblings of dissensions in the PDP they are minimal and manageable when compared to the level of dissensions in the Congress. The NC too has been plagued by bitterness among leaders who continue to be sidelined by Omar Abdullah.Since the parrty shares power with the Congress and the party Chief is the Union Minister dissidents have been forced to lie low.Against this dissidents in the congress have adopted defiant postures against the loyalists because the former have received support from the union Minister for Health,Ghulam Nabi Azad.If he separatists are plagued by disunity it is in the interest of the state and the country. One would have expected that the sway of separatists on people should have by now lost its ground but what seems to sustain those who are on the other side of the fence is the plight of mainstream political parties that have witnessed rapid erosion in their strength and areas of influence becuse of dissensions and infighting. If the ruling coalition believes that the improvement in the situation is the result of good governance it is wrong. The situation has improved because of the efforts made by the security forces and as a result of peoples' disenchantment with militants and separatists.Hence it is in the interest of the state's security and peace that the mainstream political parties resolve the problem of groupism.
