3 minors among 4 killed, ancient Shiva temple, bridge washed away | Govt school building, 2 more bridges also bear brunt of torrential rains | | Bharat Bhushan EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 12: Rain fury continued to wreak havoc on day 2, with four persons today losing their lives to flash floods while an ancient Shiva temple and a bridge were completely washed away at the famous Hindu pilgrimage centre of Uttarvehni in Samba near here. The dead included three minors. One more bridge was fully damaged at Ramgarh while another developed cracks all over near Uttarvehni where several houses were inundated in rain water. Six-year-old Devak Ram, son of Ghanu Ram - a labourer from Madhya Pradesh - was washed away in flash flood in a nullah at Patti in Vijaypur. Sunil (4), son of Chain Singh of Dhar Dangnoo Morha Kunnu in Billawar, Kathua, was wading through Kunnu nullah when it was flooded all of a sudden due to heavy rains on higher reaches and he was washed away. Jagdish (12), son of Rama Shankar of Uttar Pradesh, was washed away in Trikuta Nagar nullah here. The incident took place when he along with a person tried to cross the flooded nullah on a motorcycle, police said. He was at present putting up at railway colony along with his family. An unidentified person, who was trapped in the swollen Tawi river here at about 2.30 pm, was washed away at about 3.15 pm. He could not be saved by the authorities concerned. Yesterday, two persons were killed in flash floods while 300 odd houses were inundated in rain waters at Jawahar Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and Canal road in Jammu and in some areas of Samba. The weather was in uncontrollable fury today too with Uttarvehni bearing the brunt of heavy rains. While SSP, Samba, Israr Khan could not be contaced despite repeated attempts, Uttarvehni police post incharge, ASI Om Prakash said Devika rivulet was flooded all of a sudden in the morning as a result of which a newly constructed bridge, that linked Uttarvehni with Purmandal, was completely washed away. He said the mighty water currents also washed away an ancient Shiva temple that stood close to the bridge, besides entering the main temples. Another bridge at Motri, Uttarvehni, developed cracks all over, he informed, saying its pillars suffered damages. The ASI said the floodwater also breached Devika embankment at Uttarvehni as a result of which water entered over two dozen houses in the area. Two to three houses were, however, badly affected as almost all the household items were damaged there, he added. He said the gates of government higher secondary school in the village also gave way to rain waters which entered almost all the classrooms. Official sources said a bridge constructed by army under its sadbhavna programme at Kamore in Ramgarh, Samba, was also washed away in flash floods. Several remote Uttarvehni and Purmandal villages were cut off from the main towns due to landslides, the sources added, saying a stretch of road was washed away at Motlian. In the erstwhile Doda district too, rains triggered landslides at several places as a result of which some far-flung areas were cut off from the main towns. At least 13 members of Gujjar community were trapped along with over 200 milch animals on Basantar island at Chak Dyala Gujaran in Samba and an operation was on to rescue them till late tonight. Madan Lal's house collapsed in Billowl nullah flash flood at Teli Basti, Bari Brahmana, where four animals were washed away. Chak Shiba Khurd, Chak Shiba Kalan, Rakh Brotian and about three other low-lying villages in Samba were partially submerged in rain waters. Abdul Karim's house collapsed at Badori, resulting in the death of his six goats. Lal Chand's cattle shed collapsed due to rains at Gunda in Rajouri. He lost his 15 goats in the incident, the sources added.
