Will Uncle Sam protect democracy in JK? | US bats for Hazare | | Early Times Report jammu, Aug 12: After dropping democracy from F-16 aircrafts in Indian neighborhood, the US now seems interested in giving New Delhi a few lessons on democracy. A news report aired by NDTV this evening showed a US official urging government of India to allow Hazare to register peaceful protest. Surprisingly New Delhi has not responded yet by describing the statement an act of interference in internal affairs. Ana Hazare was instrumental in introduction of Lok Pal Bill in the parliament. His fast evoked massive response across India forcing law makers to draft the bill. Hazare, it seems, is not happy with some provisions of the Bill and has decided to go on fast unto death from August 16. The Home Minister, P Chidambaram today said that Anna Hazare's plan to go on fast from August 16 on Lokpal issue is "unjustified" at this stage, when it is moving forward on the passage of the bill. "At this stage an extra Parliamentary protest seems unjustified," he said. Upholding an individual's right to protest, Chidambaram said Hazare team's earlier fast, when the Lokpal bill was not in place, was perhaps right but not now when a bill has already been introduced in Parliament and the government has "moved forward" on it. The political drama will continue in the national capital for some time. However, in this neglected state, the US `interference' has generated fresh hopes. The fourth pillar of democracy has been repeatedly attacked by a hostile administration in this state. Curbs in the form of ban on publication, intimidation, economic blockade of newspaper houses has been a routine affair here during the past three years. The US had done so much across the globe to protect and enforce democracy. Will it do this neglected land a favour by showing concern over murder of democracy in Jammu Kashmir? |
