Mirwaiz calls for shutdown on I-Day | Clashes, crackdown continue in Srinagar, Sopore | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 12: Chairman of the separatist Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has as usual called for shutdown on occasion of the Indian Independence Day on August 15th. Unruly demonstrators today engaged Police in ding dong clashes in downtown Srinagar and Sopore. Nearly a dozen youth have been picked up by Police in a fresh crackdown on the stone pelters in Kashmir valley. With the tension building up ahead of Independence Day in the Valley and Police and security forces intensifying frisking and vigil on pedestrians and vehicular traffic, Mirwaiz Umar today asked the Kashmiris to, as usual, observe complete shutdown on August 15th. In a statement, Mirwaiz said that India and Pakistan had achieved freedom on Aug 15th and Aug 14th respectively in 1947 but the Kashmiris, according to him, continued in slavery. Mirwaiz contended that freedom was the fundamental right of all nations. Meanwhile, immediately after the Friday congregational prayers, thin groups of youngsters clashed with Police and CRPF at Nowhatta besides four other spots on Nallah Mar Road in downtown Srinagar. Demonstrators shouted pro-Azadi and anti-India slogans. They also resorted to heavy stone fighting on Police and CRPF, mainly at Police Station Nowhatta. Police and CRPF in retaliation, used baton charge and tearsmoke to disperse the unruly crowds. Unconfirmed reports said that at least six of the demonstrators sustained injuries. However, officials said that only one person got injured. They confirmed that more than a hundred suspects were arrested and detained for their alleged involvement in subversive activities. Most of the arrests have been reported in Srinagar and Sopore. Reports from Bandipore and Sopore said that youngsters in thin numbers clashed with Police for about an hour after the Friday congregational prayers. |
