BJP must give UPA dose of its own medicine | HM extends olive leaf to controversial Gujarat IPS officers, forgets victimized media in J&K | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 13: To save skin of three controversial IPS officers of Gujarat, Union Home Minister jumped into the discourse and offered his shoulders to these officers with intent to fetch political dividends across the country. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has now almost been cornered over the issue has an opportunity to salvage some pride. Central leadership of BJP realizes that P. Chidambram has extended olive leaf to the IPS Babus who have been penalized by Gujarat Chief Minister Narinder Modi only to score political points. BJP can give back Congress a dose of its own medicine by referring to muzzling of voice of media in Jammu region. It can ask UPA led coalition government painful questions and silence its high pitched advocacy of human rights and justice by questioning its silent support to the government sponsored victimization of a particular media group in Jammu region. It can ask the high profile Home Ministry of the country to stop talking about justice and equality while referring to violation of all the rights of fourth pillar of democracy in the country. Central leadership should take up the issue on its own and do not wait for the state unit of BJP to start talking. In Jammu Kashmir, the BJP unit has caused irreparable loss to image of the organization. Despite performing well in the 2008 Assembly elections, the BJP has suffered a severe jolt in Jammu. BJP MLAs resorted to cross voting and ensured election of National Conference members during elections for vacancies in Legislative Council. The party did take disciplinary action. Erring MLAS were suspended and that is it. MLAs reportedly have been acting as an extension of National Conference. NC keeps them in good humour all the time. Some have been given plots, other's flats and a few have managed memberships of prestigious clubs of the city. Their activities are likely to spill doom for the organization that ensured their elections as MLAs. Erring MLAs have deprived this people of a vibrant opposition. The coalition partners do what they want to do. And with the government having frequently attacked the media, the hapless people are virtually left with nobody to fall back upon. The grave issue of media victimization was discussed by concerned citizens with BJP leader Sushma Swaraj during her visit to Jammu. However, nothing has come out. BJP has to come out of the shell to save the state from total anarchy. But shockingly, the Central leadership of the BJP is watching helplessly. There is no denying the fact that the state authorities use Public Safety Act (PSA) recklessly and indiscriminately but authorities will not dare to invoke draconian legislation on central BJP leaders. They have, therefore, nothing to fear. Setting their house in order is no crime. The central BJP leadership must learn from the union Home Minister. He rushed to help his party workers in Gujarat and the same way, central BJP leadership should run to save the media in Jammu and Kashmir. Otherwise, time is not far when there would be no independent voice in J&K to oppose the wrong doings of government.
