8/13/2011 11:48:37 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 13 : Though New Delhi has not reopened the channels of dialogue with the Kashmiri separatists, the Hurriyat leaders hope the process of dialogue would be resumed sooner than later. "There is no alternative to dialogue," senior Hurriyat leader, Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, said adding that "no doubt that Delhi and Islamabad have begun getting engaged in sustained and purposeful dialogue the two have to talk to the representatives of people of Jammu and Kashmir."
Bhat said "we support any and every process that will reduce trust deficit between India and Pakistan and as far as the Kashmir issue is concerned people of the state are the final arbiters." To him there can be no durable settlement of the issue if people of the state were not involved in the parleys.
Asked whether the Hurriyat leaders have given up their hope for the resumption of dialogue with the centre Bhat said "there is no reason for any pessimism because Delhi and Islamabad have to hold dialogue with us and other representatives of the people of the state."
In this context he referred to the recent statement of Hurriyat Conference chairman,Molvi Umar Farooq,in which he had stated that he was ready for talks if the draconian laws, which led to the suppression of people, were repealed and the that violence was stopped. Explaining this statement Bhat said that Mirwaiz wanted that a suitable and proper atmosphere was generated that could prove conducive for purposeful talks.
Bhat referred to the recent parleys between the Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan and said that the content of the talks and the body language of the two ministers indicated that the two countries were keen to reduce trust deficit.
He said sustained talks between New Delhi and Islamabad alone could check violence and promote peace not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in the entire South Asian region.
In reply to a question Bhat said that "if Delhi and Islamabad seek our assistance in bringing the two neighbors closer we are ready to make our contribution." He said "we may not be of any help if Delhi continues to keep us at an arms length as has been happening during the last five years."
In reply to another question the Hurriyat leader said that "we welcome if Delhi conceded our demand for visiting Islamabad and Muzaffarabad so that we are able to act as a bridge between the two nations during talks in the future."(eom)
