Parray's resignation opens up only half a lid of 'Congress pot' simmering in discontent | Saturation despite power sharing …? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 13 : Senior Congress leader Muzaffar Parray's resignation from Congress party post, an ally of ruling coalition in J&K can in no way be treated as a straight and simple resignation that are common within political parties. His quitting from a senior post from a national party in power in the state in itself assumes significance in many ways. But primarily, it reflects a saturation point of stagnation and demoralization middle rung Congress leadership due to what they allege of having been pushed to the wall by current regime, with ruling 'elite' treating them as complete 'non entities'. It is now an open secret that Congress as an ally feels choked and suffocated despite sharing power in the ruling coalition. That Congress felt it from day one is also a fact known widely in the political corridors of the state. Such feelings are nourished not only by the lower rung cadres and workers of the Congress in general but also at the upper level hierarchies , sometimes even ministers having grouse over NC not giving due thought and consideration to the core political issues of the party. The fact of the matter also remains that this grouse and feeling of discrimination with Congress workers at all levels is not unfounded and baseless. While many lower rung leaders have been expressing it, albeit in whispers , the top leadership in a bid not to disturb and ruin the ties with alliance partner NC has always been trying to hush up the things under the carpet. But inevitable has to happen. Parray's resignation loaded with whole lot of complaints and grouses has only opened up half the lid of a simmering and boiling discontent down the entire hierarchy of the Congress. It is a different matter that many still choose to remain silent for fear of any undesirable reaction from the 'seniors', even though in political whispers they fully endorse and support what Parray's said it on drumbeat while tendering his resignation. Parray has boldy said his resignation is only to express his annoyance and anger against the discriminatory and humiliating approach of powers that be but it was needed to send a 'message' across every political quarter that Congress would no longer tolerate any discrimination , neither at the hands of political 'bosses' nor by the bureaucracy. The larger question after the resignation of Parray, a seasoned politician from the Valley associated with Congress for along time, is that the local leadership is now fearing if the things continue in 'present' form many more leaders may part ways with the party and eventually join NC or even the opposition PDP. There are dozen's of leaders like Parray who have worked hard and are still doing that in order to nourish the political constituencies of the party especially in place like Kashmir where space for nationalist parties is very narrow for apparent reasons. When Congress formed the alliance once again, this time with NC, the hopes and expectations of the workers and cadres also rose high only to be dashed on ground in no time. As the time passed, the Congress rank and file realized they had no say, not to speak of powers that would fetch them any benefits or please the workers at the ground level. Not to speak of NC ministers, the leaders and functionaries of the Congress gradually found that even the ministers of their own party were helpless and not in a position to provide any relief or help to the needy quarters in the party. And contrary to this, what adds to the frustration of Congress leaders is that NC leaders of their stature or ranks and even junior to them are more powerful in many ways and therefore calling shots at every level, which goes a long way to build up base and strengthen the constituencies. |
