Remove waste from Amarnath yatra routes by Aug 20: Vohra
8/14/2011 8:35:05 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, August 14, 2011
Jammu and Kashmir governor N N Vohra has directed the authorities of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to remove all solid wastes from the yatra routes to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas within one week. Vohra, who visited various base camps of the yatra yesterday,
directed chief executive officer SASB R K Goyal to ensure that both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes are cleared of all solid wastes by August 20.

The governor, who is also chairman of the SASB, directed that the disposal of garbage and removal of wastes should be completed before the onset of winter in the yatra areas.

The annual Amarnath yatra to the 3,880-metre high cave shrine concluded yesterday. A record number of 6.35 lakh pilgrims paid obeisance to the naturally formed ice-lingam during the 46-day pilgrimage.

More than 100 pilgrims and four Muslim porters died due to natural causes as the pilgrims had to pass through extreme weather conditions and altitudes with rarefied oxygen level.

Vohra, before the commencement of the yatra, had asked the SASB authorities to ensure cleanliness of the yatra area during the pilgrimage and formulate a comprehensive post-yatra sanitation plan in view of the fragile ecology of the area.

The environmentalists have often raised concerns about the level of solid wastes left behind by the ever increasing number of pilgrims to the holy cave located near the snow line of glaciers in south Kashmir which feed the rivers of the valley.
