Provide information within 4-weeks: HC to NHPC, government | PIL by civil society group | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 14 (KNS): The High Court has ordered Union Power ministry, National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) and state government to provide details of all the hydro power projects in Jammu and Kashmir to a civil society group within four weeks time. Sources told KNS that the High Court has strictly asked the NHPC and Union Power ministry to provide the details to the applicants without delay. A civil society group compromising Industrialist Shakil Qalandar, Journalist Bashir Assad, President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce Nazir Ahmad Dar, former bureaucrat Ghulam Nabi Naik and others had filed a PIL against the government and the NHPC in the High Court. NHPC is facing a lot criticism from all quarters of Kashmir that includes the elite politicians, and is now often termed as, ‘New East India Company’ for its alleged exploitation of State’s water resources. Meanwhile, the NHPC has deposited an amount of Rs 138 crore to the Jammu and Kashmir government on account of water usage charges of its hydel projects in the state. As per the provisions of J&K Water Resources Act 2010, every company harnessing water resources in the state has to pay user charges to the state government. J&K currently buys electricity worth Rs 3000 crore from Power Trade Corporation annually. |
