MLA flags off ‘run for green Poonch’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Poonch Aug 14-As a part of Independence Day celebration, a special “Run for Green Poonch” was organised by District Administration here today. As many as, 250 students drawn from various educational institutions, officers of district administration and senior citizens of civil society participated in the Marathon run sponsored by District Youth Services and Sport Office in coordination with education department. MLA Poonch, Ajaz Ahmed Jan, along with District Development Commissioner, Poonch, Ajeet Kumar Sahu flagged off them batches of male and female students separately early at 6.30 a.m. SSP, Ashkoor Ahmed Wani, ADC, officers of district administration and prominent citizens of civil society were among other who was present at the flagging off function. Surjeet Singh of Sports Council and students, Zahid and Mohammad Hafeez respectively secured first, second and third prize in 7 km run. Among girls Ruksana Tabusum, Nighat Tabusum and Nahida Ajnum respectively secured first, second and third prizes in 5 km. Students also led a rally in the markets of the Poonch town chanting slogans including, smoking is a well of death, plant and trees preserve atmosphere, plant tree to save human race and Poonch. An impressive function was conducted in sports stadium in this connection where in MLA was chief guest, DDC and SSP attended as the guest of honours. Speakers appreciated the move of district administration for organizing the run to spread the message of preserving the environment by planting trees and limiting the activities which create air and noise pollution. They also called for discouraging the use of polythene and avoiding the use of methane and other poisonous gases. They exhorted for planting maximum trees and make use of dust bins for disposal of waste material. They further stressed that collective efforts of government and public in general can achieve the target to maintain green Poonch. On the culmination of function, winner students were awarded mementos and others consolation prizes.
