Tussle in BJP is between confrontation and those favouring reconciliation | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 14 : The state unit of the BJP is divided between two sets of opinion, one favoring reconciliation with those seven MLAs who have been suspended on charge of anti-party activities and the second opting for confrontation. Sources within the party say that those who are for reconciliation argue that since the seven MLAs had pockets of influence in various areas of Jammu region, especially in the constituencies they represent in the state Assembly, their expulsion from the party could lead to further erosion in the BJP. But those wanting the party high command to opt for confrontation in the interest of the party unity have informed Delhi that those MLAs who had allegedly defied the party whip by voting against the BJP candidate in the Legislative Council election held in April last were reportedly "hobnobbing" with the National Conference. One senior BJP leader, wishing to remain unidentified said "we have reports that even if action was not taken against the erring MLAs they may continue to side with the National Conference."He said "we know that if these MLAs were sacked from the BJP they may not hesitate joining the National Conference." Asked how was it possible when they could lose membership of the House if they were expelled from the party the BJP leader said "it will depend on the speaker of the Assembly." Explaining it the BJP leader said that the speaker has enormous powers and "it is he who can decide whether any MLA has earned disqualification under the anti-defection law or not." The BJP leader made it clear that under the anti-defection law, that is in force in Jammu and Kashmir, the seven MLAs,who have been suspended from the primary membership of the party, cannot form a separate party within the Assembly under the pretext of BJP having registered a split. He said the seven MLAs have adopted defiant post ures and some of them have gone to the court to challenge their suspension instead of seeking an apology. However, some of the BJP MLAs have accused the party leadership of having hatched a "conspiracy" against "us."They said that they were targeted without any definite proof of "our having voted against the party candidate."They alleged that they continue to doubt those who have been dubbed by the party high command as "M/s clean." Those supporting strict action against the seven MLAs said that since the time the seven MLAs were suspended the BJP leadership carried out various programmes and held a number of public meetings and conventions."Party is more important than individuals and we will not allow the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir to witness any erosion because those who support BJP they do so for its policies and ideologies and they do not vote for individuals but for the party, "they said. Indications are that the current problem in the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir is the result of clash of ego among half a dozen senior party leaders.(eom) |
