| Alleged Delhi blasts mastermind shot dead | | | SRINAGAR, DEC 1 A Lashker-e-Toiba deputy commander, who is believed to have masterminded the blasts in Delhi last year, was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said here today. Ali Baba alias Abu Hufeza was shot dead by troops of 29 Rashtriya Rifles (Grenadiers) near Kreeri village last night in a "swift and surgical" operation, the spokesman said. Hailing from Sindh in Pakistan, Baba was the self-styled deputy commander of LeT in Pattan-Sopore area and is believed to have masterminded the serial blasts which took place in Delhi in October 2005, the spokesman said. The troops, acting on a tip-off from the locals about presence of the LeT militant in the fields outside Kreeri village in Pattan area, 27 kms from here, launched an operation, the spokesman said. The militant was trapped in a nallah and a fierce fire-fight ensued, resulting into his killing, the spokesman said. He said it was a well-planned and executed operation which ensured that there was no casualty to any civilian or damage to any civilian property. The slain militant was active in the Pattan-Sopore area for the past two years, the spokesman said adding he had earlier escaped from the dragnet of security forces on a couple of occasions. Besides masterminding the Delhi blasts, he was also involved in a large number of atrocities against innocent civilians in the valley, the spokesman said. |
