Technology boom shatters bonding | | | Vaibhavi Chandel EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 15: Life has undergone a drastic change over the years. We may call it modernization or whatsoever but the fact remains that it is no more the 'good old days' when the life did not only mean spending time with friends; working like a workaholic for earning additional bucks; remaining glued to the television sets to watch sop serials; to play games on mobile or to get engrossed in social networking. The technological development has greatly invaded our homes, leaving little time for spending with friends and families. It has taken toll of time to such an extent that even the joint mealtime has got terribly affected. Even if you find time to sit together on the dinning table, the small screen and the favourite serial keeps you so engrossed that you have little to share with those sitting by your side. They too have a little to share with you as they too sail the same boat. In this era, most of the children and even the youngsters or adults, prefer to remain glued to television screens or engrossed with their computers while having meals. But, this isn't really a treatise on respecting food. Generally in the hectic lifestyle, the time spent with the family has reduced and whatsoever time is left is utilized in socializing. There was a time when the family used to sit around the table, and go through pots of steaming food course by course, chatting, laughing, and trading gossip. All this was, of course, before television conquered the living rooms. But with the advancement, now no meal these days is considered complete without a dash of television. What started, as a convenience - bunging the child in front of the television, distracting them, getting them to swallow 'vile' greens - is now a full-blown crisis. Not only this, major problems like rise in childhood obesity, crumbling family structures, lacking table manners can be attributed to the television. "The thing which was introduced as a source of entertainment has become an addiction for the society. Many people feel uncomfortable if their schedules get changed or favourite serials get missed, for one or the other reason. Television is now ruling the lives of the people. When my children have the television on, they are like zombies. Even pestering for doing their home work or any other work goes to deaf ears until they finish watching their favourite show", says Ranjana , a school teacher. "Children generally remain glued to the television screens. When she was small, I just used to make her sit in front of television to make her eat something, but now she has become a television addict. She stores the food in her mouth, too engrossed to swallow, while she's in front of the television. Cutting back television time is an obvious solution, except, this there is no solution," laments Amrita, a homemaker. There has been drastic change in the life style which has surely affected the family life. 'My husband is very strict. When our children were young, he used to drive out books, newspapers, and even used to switch off the television during meal times. Though it worked and the routine went well. But now as the children have grown up, they spend time flashing sms's to their friends or chatting online. So, in the present world family word has just lost relevance as even living in the same house a person is not able to approach the other person for days together, "says Amrita Bakshi, who works with a MNC. "Television has killed bonding, intelligent conversations or anything even remotely resembling quality family time," says Amrita. She says, "Most of the quality family time is spend in front of the television, so when a person gets free from this, entire he is supposed to think about the next day's routine. I always think of getting the television out and the conversation back in as healthy conversation is a key factor in keeping the family intact. But will it be worth the trouble?" |
