Work starts on Bhatinda-Srinagar gas pipeline, to complete in three years | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 16: The work on the prestigious 750-km gas pipeline project from Bhatinda to Srinagar has started and is expected to complete in next three years. Highly placed sources said that the ambitious pipeline will allow direct transfer of the liquid gas from refinery in Punjab to Jammu and Kashmir, to ensure that during winter season the people of Kashmir, Ladakh and other mountainous districts get proper supply. The project was approved by a high level committee last year and the approval was given by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently. Project aspire to link the state with National Gas Grid and ultimately linking individual households with the gas stations through a network of supply pipelines to get unabated gas supply throughout the year is the main objective of the project. "It will relieve the State from energy crisis to a great extent and help divert hydro power for other judicious use," he said, adding that industrialisation would get necessary impetus by this project. Sources said that it is pipeline will be of immense help during the winter months when most of the areas remain cut off from the rest of the country. “It will minimise the dependence of transportation of LPG cylinders in winter months when highways are usually blocked due to weather vagaries and heavy snowfalls," he said. For the purpose Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department has been established as nodal agency for the project at the state level, while Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu would oversee its affairs at divisional level and respective Deputy Commissioners at the district levels. It is pertinent to mention here that the proposal was first mooted in 2009 by Gujarat State Petronet Limited (GSPL), a gas transmission subsidiary of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, has proposed laying down of a gas pipeline network up to Jammu and Kashmir, connecting Gandhinagar and Srinagar. The company has taken up this ambitious plan to expand its gas transmission business outside Gujarat, covering four states Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and J&K. As per estimates, GSPL would have to invest approximately Rs 3,000 crore for laying the 1000-km network. The company has already submitted its proposal to Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for clearance. The hook-up point for this proposed pipeline is Mehsana. Up to here, GSPL has already laid a network. The main pipeline would be laid up to Jammu, via Bhatinda, under the new proposal submitted last week. From Jammu, a 293-km long smaller pipeline, called spur line, will be built up to Srinagar. The entire project is expected to be completed within two years from date of clearance.
