Will Indians afford 2 PMs in the country? | After Padgoanker's report! | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 16: New Delhi's nominated interlocutors are likely to submit their final report in the coming days. Informed political circles believe that the report may recommend restoration of Article 370 in its original form. And, it this really happens, Jammu Kashmir will not only get autonomy but all other guarantees promised by the original 370. Pertinent to mention the Article 370 in its present form has failed to evoke interest from the people of Kashmir. According to them, it serves no purpose. The Supreme Court has jurisdiction over the state. The Auditor General of India, the Election Commission of India function here. The Parliament can frame laws for Jammu Kashmir; President's rule can be extended to the state. What does it protect the state from? Shockingly the power of Parliament to frame laws for Jammu Kashmir was accepted by Sher-e-Kashmir himself in 1975. Before his deputy signed the 1975 accord, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, during an interaction with the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said: "Let us start from where I left in 1953. Gandhi replied, Sheikh Saheb, while I respect your sentiments, I must tell you that the clock cannot be turned back." This is where the `separatist' in him died down. He was hopeful of a generous deal from the Prime Minister but she disappointed him. She was not ready to have two Prime Ministers in the country. Can the people of India afford two Prime ministers in the country now? Restoration of Article 370 in its original form, political analysts believe, can open a Pandora's Box for the state government as well as for rest of the country. Jammu and Ladakh are not in favour of restoration of anything that weakens their relationship with India. Similarly the people of Kashmir are not in favour of anything that strengthens the `bonds' with New Delhi. So who wants restoration of autonomy in the state? And, who is interested in Article 370? Such moves will further polarize the state. It will also have disastrous consequences elsewhere in the country. |
