Anna wave fails to cross into Kashmir
8/17/2011 12:37:35 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 16: Invariably the 8000 ft high Pir Panjal mountain range prevents any political wave from entering into the Kashmir valley. This is what has happened on Tuesday when the Anna Hazare wave, that swept the entire country, failed to cross into Kashmir where not a single protest rally or demonstration was held in support of Anna who was detained during the early ours of the morning alongwith several top civil society activists.
This is what had happened in 1977 when the Janata Party wave failed to cross over to Kashmir.
In various parts of the country, including several villages and towns, men, women and children squatted, fasted, protested, faced police lathis while demonstrating their support to Anna's struggle against corruption and corrupt practices.
Police swung into action and whisked away all top activists of the civil society thereby preventing them from marching to the J.P. Park for starting their fast. Not only the leaders belonging to the BJP but some civil society activists, including Kiran Bedi, a former police Chief, criticised the Government for having imposed "undeclared emergency." However, this charge was rebutted by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ambika Soni.
Even when people in Kashmir saw on television news channels the number of protesters and squatters swelling in various parts of the country they were unable to join protest rallies because the tall Pir Panjal mountain range had prevented the Anna wave from crossing into the valley. Yes, they were moved by the way unarmed and peace loving social activists, lawyers, academicians and political leaders were taken into custody.
Number of academicians in Kashmir saw in the protest rallies the seeds of another freedom struggle because of the mass support Anna's call had evoked.
In Jammu a number of political leaders, belonging to the BJP and the Panthers Party, said that the Congress led UPA Government had shown that it has sufficient strength to fight against peaceful protesters but it is helpless before the Naxals, the Maoists and the Kashmir separatists and militants.
Whatever one may say about the Government action against Anna and his supporters one may have to ponder over the failure of the Anna wave in entering into Kashmir. In 1977 the country was swept by the Janata Party wave which dislodged the Congress not only in the centre but in several states also. However, the same Janata Party wave did not cross into Kashmir in 1977.
The result was that while the Janata Party won power in the centre it was mauled in Kashmir by the National Conference. The Janata Party had won two seats out of 42 seats in the Kashmir valley.
Possibly people in Kashmir have their own problems. They have been witnessing traumatic experiences during the last 21 years which have left no strength in them to join hands with Anna who has vowed to root out corruption from the country.
