Anna Hazare's arrest; Lessons for Jammu leadership, masses | United against Corruption...... | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Aug 16: Leadership across Jammu region has a lesson to learn from how the country responded to the arrest of veteran social activist Anna Hazare. All condemned subversion of democracy in one voice. Thousands of young people gathered outside Tihar Jail and did not leave until the UPA led government realized the wrong committed by it. They announced release of Anna Hazare but the old hawk refused to come out of Barrack no. 4 of Tihar Jail, a place where he was supposed to share bed with three political criminals, all facing serious charges of corruption and loot of public exchequer. Anna, the man with iron fist has refused to accept the release order of union government, signed in contravention to all laid rules and regulations by Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and not by the executive magistrate, the man who had issued arrest order and even sent Anna to Tihar jail on seven day Judicial remand. Jammu needs to learn a lesson or two. Refusal to become part of struggles launched from various platforms has cost this region too much. Things have gone from bad to worst but from leaders to commoners, all have preferred to remain silent. They watch events unfolding, wail over them, discuss them wherever they find an opportunity, debate them over lunch and dinner but refuse to agitate. When Media which has been playing pivotal role in Anna Hazare's movement against corruption faced onslaught on its freedom in Jammu, all discussed it in their closed rooms and even sympathized with the owners of the media house in private but when they were asked to register their protest in public, they refused citing thousands of unrealistic reasons. One ponders, had Anna been in Jammu, government would not have sent a top officer to arrest him but a constable alongwith three or four Jawans. The so-called civil society of Jammu would have protested in private and then forgotten him. Time and again, it has been seen that whenever state government has discriminated with Jammu region, media has highlighted it. Jammu leadership has become habitual of reading newspaper reports, discussing them in their closed chambers and thereafter, forgetting the same altogether for all years to come. The manner in which country reacted to Anna Hazare's arrest teaches a lot. Jammu leadership should step in, stop issuing press notes over flimsy issues, take up a cause and fight for it till it is not achieved. They have to realize that every Jammuite deserves to be taken care of in times of need and unity should be the core principal while fighting for issues which have both social and political implications. The Anna issue teaches persistence and steadfastness for achieving goals and preventing the stifling of democratic spirit. Dancing to the beating to drums over the appointment of a army man turned Bureaucrat as Vice-Chancellor of an academic institutions in contravention to all rules and regulations speaks in volumes about how easily we get tired and accept half baked cakes offered by a government which is taken for a ride off and on by separatists across Kashmir valley. Decide yourself, Jammu based media houses were humiliated but none stepped in to protest and prevent its freedom. From politicians to social groups, all had their version of the story for not coming to the rescue of an independent institution. On another occasion, a crazy politician abused two senior media persons in full public view but all preferred silence. None realized that it was not humiliation of two individuals but pulverization of entire media fraternity intended at damaging an institution which in the present times has become the last hope for a common man seeking justice. Jammu leaders, commoners and social groups should stop giving sermons and instead, get their act together and fight for issues of significant political and social importance. They should stop celebrating insignificant victories and instead, get united and raise voice against any kind of subversion of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.
