EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 17: Citizens Forum has demanded making electric crematorium at the Jogi Gate cremation ground operational at the earliest.

A meeting of the Citizens Forum held here today, under the Chairmanship of its President R K Chadha expressed serious concern over the electric crematorium remaining non functional even after about a decade of its installation at the Jogi Gate cremation ground. As a result of it huge amount spent on it is lying blocked and going waste.

The forum observed that a large number of individual donors and Philanthropist organizations had donated huge amounts for installing electric crematorium, but non operation of the same ever since its installation is causing concern among these donors, who smell some rot in the whole affair.

Voluntary organizations like Red Cross Society, Sava Samiti and some social groups and Joined hands to collect the donations for the electric crematorium at Jogi Gate. In the absence of the same made operational, the bereaved families are forced to cremate their deceased with fire wood, which has become very costly and not affordable to the poor.

The forum further observed that in the rainy season the wood logs become wet and take a very long time to light the fire, causing hardship to the mourners at the ghat. Chadha told the meeting that a donor who had donated Rs. 50 thousand for the project has expressed to him his dismay over none functioning of the electric crematorium and he feels cheated of his money by the organizations who have installed the same after collecting huge donations from many people.

The forum has suggested that in case the voluntary organizations, which had come forward to collect donations for the electric crematorium, cannot handle the project and make it operational, some semi Govt agency, like Jammu Municipal Corporation should take over the same and operate it.

The others who attended the meeting included SK Gupta Retd. Chief Engineer, Vikram Gour Rtd. Chief Engineer, J.S .Chouhan a prominent citizen, Mohammad Ayub Rtd. Secy Bose, K.K.Mahajan prominent businessman.
