15 satellite fruit and vegetable markets being set up in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 17:On the persistent demand of fruit growers and traders the state Government has started raising cold storage facilities at various fruit growing areas in the state in order to ensure that the growers did not face losses owing to delay in transhipment of the consignments.
Official sources said that these cold storage facilities were being developed at
Sopore, Baramulla, Kupwara, Handwara, Bandipore, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Parimpora and Budgam(all in Kashmir).
The Minister for Horticulture, Sham Lal Sharma, hopes that these facilities would be made available to the fruit growers from the current season.
Under the Minister's guidance cold storage facilities were being developed at Narwal, Akhnoor, Udhampur, Kathua(all in Jammu). The total capacities of these cold storages is expected to touch over five lakh metric tonnes.
The Government of India has agreed to provide financial assistance for the setting up of cold storage facilities at the Srinagar airport. The Department of Horticulture has already provided 150 sq metre area at the airport.
Experts are of the opinion that in the absence of cold storages fruit growers and traders usually suffered heavy losses when the most perishable fruits could not be airlifted or sent by road on time. To avoid this the Government plans to press into service 17 refrigerated vans,14 in Kashmir and three in Jammu region, for transhipment of fruit from the orchards to the mandis and markets. These vans will be used for commercial purpose.
Official sources said that since the Government expected the state to produce between 18 and 20 lakh metric tonnes of fruit it set up 15 satellite fruit and vegetable markets across the state. In addition to this three terminal markets had been set up within the state.
Sham Lal Sharma said that last year 20.56 lakh metric tonnes of fruit were produced in the state against 17.12 lakh metric tonnes in 2009.He hoped that despite weather vagaries the total fruit production may touch 18 to 19 lakh metric tonnes. He said that the state would export annually fruit worth Rs 250 to Rs.300 crores and the Government aimed at increasing the export revenue to R s.500 crores per year.
