Need to remember national pledge on Independence Day | | BALBIR RAM | 8/17/2011 9:30:00 PM |
| The historic day of August 15 is most memorable for every Indian, irrespective of his or her caste, creed, religion and region. Every one know that it was on this day in the year 1947 when India got freedom from the British rule after a long, continuous struggle and thousands of sacrifices. The patriotic people were given inhuman treatment, tortured, put into jails and even hanged but they did not bow or deviate from their mission of getting their motherland freed from the clutches of cruel rulers. Their sacrifices wore fruits and the British were forced to leave India. While the Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the Red Fort (Lal qila) Delhi, functions are organised with pomp and gaiety, across the length and breadth of India by political, social, educational, even religious organisations, wherein Cultural programmes and flag-hoisting ceremonies are the predominant affair of the day. The people indulge themselves in remembering the heroes of the freedom struggle and pay homage to them. People tag flags on their chests with pride to show their patriotism towards the nation. The day, also called Swatantrata Divas, is observed as National Holiday. Although it is a day to pay a mark of respect to our saviors because of whom we are breathing an air of freedom which doesnot have the elements of exploitation and repression, the importance and celebration of the day can not be complete until all of us remember and recite our National Pledge. which say- "India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worthy of it. I shall give my parents, teachers and all elders respect and treat everyone with courtesy. To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion. In their well being and prosperity alone, lies my happiness. In the present times, when there are growing communal and caste conflicts, it becomes significant to remind us that the people who laid the foundation of free India and are part of history today, had always dreamt of an integrated nation. Hence, it is our duty to live and sustain their dreams, which is also a reason for observing and celebrating Independence Day in India. Although speeches are deliverd in praise of the martyrs of independence, grand memorials have been constructed and awards and postal stamps started in their names, numerous institutions have their names but merely remembering the sacrifices of patriotic people on a single day in a year is not enough. |
