MIND AND MEDITATION | | Sulakshna Sharma | 8/18/2011 9:51:13 PM |
| Mediation is the freedom from thought. The emptying of the mind is the real act of meditation. Meditation is a state of mind which looks at everything with complete attention. To give constant attention to every part of our work at all times is to practice meditation. A meditable mind is silent and it is the silence where thought with all its images has entirely ended. It is well known that there are several hidden thoughts, suppressed desires and lurking fears in the subconscious mind of which man is unaware. Meditation is the operation of mind, by mind with mind. It is a vital part of Astang yogic Sadhana which has weight steps, viz, yamas, Niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyana and somdadhi. Meditation is a method which gives access to the subconscious mind to study how a though is processed there. It is a sort of though good and bad comes on the surface of the mind and it is automatically analyzed. The harmful effects of bad thoughts come into the open and the practitioner is strongly motivated to give them up. The quest for happiness is eternal and to be really happy, a man has to fight determinedly against all meditation. It has been well said, you may go forth in search of happiness, but to find it, you must return and look within.” When a person is relaxed and his mind is calm and quiet, it is only then that clear thinking is possible, “Science is the element in which great things fashion themselves,” says Carlyle. When a person fixes his attention with single pointed determination, on any subject or object, he can have great achievements. Yoga is a science of the soil which helps the practitioner to realize his self (who am I?) and experience in Samadhi that he is in essence the ‘soul’ and not the physical body. Self- realization is a pre- requisite to God realization. Meditation is a course of destructive flash; because one has to disown even this body (dwelling place of Jiva Atma) together with allied worldly belongings and so one avoids it. It changes one’s course of life. One must meditate in solitude to have a free mind, to be for away from everything, from every thought. “Wisdom springs from Meditation.” “Wisdom loves the lonely worshipper.” Sulakshna Sharma Lect.
