| World AIDS Day observed | | Simple, Disciplined life habits key to prevention from AIDS: Mangat | |
JAMMU | DEC 1 “Only prevention and living a discipline life is the answer to restrict AIDS and save mankind from dreaded disease”, said Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mangat Ram Sharma while addressing teachers and students at a function organized at GCW Gandhi Nagar to observe the AIDS Prevention Day. On the occasion, several other institutions also organized programmes to observe the day. The Jammu and Kashmir State AIDS Prevention and Control Society organized the function at Gandhi Nagar. Sharma said that educational institutions are the appropriate forum to educate younger generation about the preventive measures to be adopted to curb the killer disease. He asked the students to take the message of AIDS prevention to nook and corner of their town, mohalla and help educate rural masses. President Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Ram Sahai, Director Health Services, Dr. Jasbir Singh, Principal GCW Gandhi Nagar, Prof Bina Gupta, Director RCH, Dr. Rakesh Khajuria, HOD Blood Transfusion Dr. Kum Kum Sharma, other senior Doctors, Professor, Teachers and a large number of students were also present. Meanwhile, Dogra College of Education organized an Inter Collegiate Symposium on the topic “AIDS- Myths and Realities” in collaboration with Centre for Adult and Continuing Education and Extension, University of Jammu. 24 participants from 12 different colleges participated in the symposium. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust was also present on the occasion. In the observance of the AIDS Day, Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) Northern Command organized a lecture on HIV and AIDS. A skit by the wives of Jawans was also presented. The function was presided over by President AWWA, Asha Singh. Stephens International Public School, Miran Sahib organized a rally on the occasion of World AIDS Day. The rally passed through Tinday, Simbal morh and Miran Sahib. The children were carrying banners, posters and charts for the awareness of the general masses about the deadly diseases. The Principal headed the rally accompanied by teachers. SOS Hermann Gmeiner School and JKSPYM today organised a rally in the city to observe the World AIDS Day. The rally commenced from Bikram Chowk and culminated at Canal Road in which school children and members of teaching faculty carrying coloured placards inscribing catchy slogans participated. Inspector General Police, Dr SP Vaid flagged off the rally. Similarly, Francolise Xavier Bagnoud and Sangharsha Yuva Morcha jointly organised a function in connection with observance of AIDS day at village Sohal-Gopala in Akhnoor where educative lectures were delivered to the students and local people stressing them to spread the today’s message at the grass-roots level for the overall benefit of the populace. At Rajouri, 150 General Hospital arranged a Seminar-cum-Health exhibition on “AIDS awareness”. Maj Gen Rameshwar Roy, General Officer Commanding Ace spades Division lauded the efforts in holding such programmes in mountainous belts saying Jawans posted outside their homes would take advantage of seminar Sunjuwan Military Station also observed AIDS awareness Day among students and people of the area. A series of lectures were held for the ladies of the station. Geeta Jamwal, President AWWA also addressed the ladies and acquainted them about the disease and the responsibility they have. Nehru Yuva Kendra, Ministry of Youth Affairs Rajouri in collaboration with’ Khadmat Khalaak ‘ a youth wing organised a seminar on AIDS Day. Dr Iqbal Malik was the chief guest, while Dr Sarish Malik was guest of honour. Thakur Nasir Khan, a National awardee, Abid Malik, Mohd Yousaf and Pooja Kumari delivered the lectures on prevention of AIDS. Shiv Sena Hindustan, President Dimpy Kohli speaking on AIDS awareness function criticized the State Health Department for not making available adequate medicare facilities to persons affected with the disease. He said that blood bank too in government Medical College is also lacking testing facilities saying that the graph of such patients is going on higher side in Jammu and Kashmir day-by-day.
