In the same breath he said it was for the President of India to look at the 'wider picture' and take a final decision on his mercy petition. "As Chief Minister of the state I am concerned with the situation in J&K…..I certainly would not like the peace and stability of the state to be disturbed…..", Omar said responding to a question during the press conference here today . " Having seen situation during the last three years I do have certain apprehensions about what could happen if Afzal Guru were to be hanged". Chief Minister said adding that he has responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the state . But ultimately it is the President of India to decide on the mercy petition.." She has to look at the wider picture ….my interest is situation in J&K", Omar said . The chief Minister said he has against hanging as he had apprehensions of peace getting disturbed. " My pure concern is peace in Kashmir……I have already shared this concern with Government of India" he observed. Replying to a question he said the report to be submitted by the Interlocutors must deal with political aspirations of the people." The Home minister of the country is on record of having said that J&K acceded to India under unique circumstances and therefore it needed unique solution", Omar said " I believe it (Kashmir problem) would receive the attention of the interlocutors as it deserves", he said adding frequent visits of interlocutors to state and their interaction had generated expectations in many quarters ."We have attached a lot of importance to the job of interlocutors and I am interested to know about 'findings'…….", he said. He said differences that cropped up between on interlocutor and two others were unfortunate but this would not reflect in the report as the latter was in final stage of preparation. "But I hope the report receives the attention it deserves", the Omar said. The Chief Minister said it was reluctance on part of Pakistan government which had become a cause of delay in forward movement of the settlement of cases with regard to Rehabilitation policy framed by state government for the youth who are waiting to cross over and return to their homes for good. " We have received a number of applications and we want implementation as soon as possible. "But there are hurdles and hassels from Pakistan in giving clearance to certain aspects", he said adding that both Centre as well as state government has since sorted out the cases and the process is moving ahead, not stuck up. He said even as Government of India has expressed displeasure of Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani during her visit to India preferring to meet Hurriyat leaders firs, the Chief Minister said it was only 'anticipated and expected'. "I do not think it should affect the prospects of Indo -Pak talks……..," he observed. The Chief Minister said that if cabinet sub committee set up for the purpose of discussing report of Justice Saghir Ahmad on Centre state relations needed more time beyond the deadline he would prefer to give that rather than having any 'report' that would cause problems for the government in the state. "It is no ordinary issue……therefore cannot afford any decision taken in a hurry", he maintained. |
