Why should New Delhi give autonomy to JK?
8/19/2011 12:40:43 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 18: The coalition partners are once again on war path over restoration of autonomy. While National Conference seeks autonomy, the Congress has been opposing it. Amid arguments and counter arguments, the coalition is struggling to survive.
The tussle is likely to get intense in the coming days when New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Akshmir are expected to submit their final report. According o informed sources, the interlocutors are likely to recommend restoration of autonomy to the state.
But why should New Delhi give autonomy to National Conference? It is an admitted fact that separatists call the shots in contemporary Kashmir. During last year's agitation, the Chief Minister had to appeal geelani for restoration of peace. Even he went to the extent of challengingt he totality of accession during his speech in the legislative assembly. If autonomy is given to Syed Ali Geelani, who runs the show, the problem will be solved once for all (if Geelani accepts it).
Geelani, however, has made his intentions clear. He is not interested in autonomy. He has given his five point formula and wants the government of india to accept Jammu Kashmi as a disputed territory. Like him, the majority of the people in kashmir are not interested in autonomy.
Interestingly nobody in Jammu and Ladakh has shown any liking for autonomy. So why should New Delhi resore autonomy? And to whom shall it be gifted? Gifting it NC will make no difference. And the people who matter are averse to the very idea.
The report of the interlocutors shall not be taken as the final word on the issue. The recommendations have to be discussed in proper for a. It is the Parliament that can take a decision on the issue. And for taking the historic decision, a partiucular number of parliamentrians are needed. The Congress party does not have the numbers.
