| Congress cannot get into driving seat with two drivers | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 18: The Congress party stands to lose everything including its chances to gain political power in Jammu and Kashmir because of its internal strife. The Congress has been a divided house for the last some years and the advantage of that goes only to those who do not want the Congress house to be in order.
The problem has been that the Congress wants the central leadership to intervene and ensure rotation of power in the state without realizing that a divided house cannot be decorated as its very foundation remains doubtful in the eyes of the people.
It is in the best interests of the Congress leadership in the state to sink their differences and join hands to strengthen the party and doing that is the only way to power for the Congress. With the Congress divided within itself, its rivals in the BJP and other parties could just not ask for more. The constant bickering and infightings in the Congress would only erode its base in Jammu region which is actually the winning field for the Congress party. It embarrasses the party's central leadership to be told over and over again about the squabbles of the state Congress. The demands and assertions of the state Congress leaders do not carry weight before the central leaders because the leader of the one faction in the state always counters the arguments of the other faction. The base of the party also gets eroded because of the bickering at the state leadership level.
The Congress activists have been complaining that they are being ignored and brushed aside by the ministers and also the civil servants essentially because the Congress leadership is divided. It was because of the internal problems that one leader of the Congress resigned from the party recently.
The other fallout has been that the party is seriously thinking of approaching the state high court with regard to on the spot recruitments in the police department.
The problem for the Congress does not only come from its rivals. The so-called allies of the Congress in the National Conference are also enjoying the predicament of the Congress. The Top leaders in the NC are known to tell the top leaders of the Congress in Delhi that serious differences in the state Congress are one of the reasons for the declining popularity of the ruling alliance in the state.
The Congress has already shrunken its political role in the Valley because its political campaigns are sabotaged not by the PDP, but by its partners in the NC.
The Congress has every time to face its ground level party workers with complaints of being bushed to the wall by block, district and provincial administration. The Congress workers are taken lightly by officers because the NC workers have to be obliged and this always happens at the cost of the Congress.
It is not difficult to sink differences and rise to the occasion. The Congress must first build internal bridges and later talk of bridging the gaps between its demands and their treatment by the high command. If you want to get into driving seat in Jammu and Kashmir then you must first decide who would be the driver? There cannot be two drivers because governing Jammu and Kashmir is not an easy task. The sooner the Congress sinks its differences by understanding this essential reality, the closer they would be to power in Jammu and Kashmir. |
