Can't Omar do what he advises Mufti to do? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 19 : A strange comment has been made by State Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah the other day. The Chief Minister said he would provide space to PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Syed only if the latter started his campaign against corruption from his home. The Chief Minister is not only the chief executive of the State, but also the conscience keeper of the state administration. It was not in good taste that the Chief Minister should speak in a casual and non-serious manner like he did. Accepted that there is political animosity between the ruling NC and the PDP. Accepted that the political one-upmanship between the two arch political rivals demands they must cut deep into each other's pocket borough to increase their popularity. Despite this, the Chief Minister cannot and should not speak in the same tone and tenor as his political ground level activists might. Mudslinging might be okay in politics, but when the Chief Minister says something it has to have legal and moral sanctity. It is shocking that Omar Abdullah should tell his political rival to start a campaign against corruption, but it would only be provided space by him if he starts the campaign from his home. The Chief Minister needs to come out clean as to what he means by starting the campaign at home. Isn't it mandatory for every politician whether in power or outside it to start the campaign against corruption from home. Would the Chief Minister please say clearly and plainly what Aegean Stables need cleansing in the home of the Muftis? At the same time, the Chief Minister must also speak of the war against corruption that must begin from the homes of the various ministers, bureaucrats and politicians. Or does the Chief Minister mean it is only Mufti Mohammad Syed who must start campaign against corruption from his home while all other politicians, ministers, bureaucrats etc can continue to enjoy the fruits of corruption at home and also deliver long speeches against it in the public. Charity must begin at home both for Mufti Mohammad Syed and Omar Abdullah and also for all other politicians. It is against propriety and fair play that we should have politicians of the stature of Omar Abdullah or for that matter, Mufti Mohammad Syed who blame each other in lowly fashions. Politics must have some dignity. Is corruption just the problem of Mufti Mohammad Syed and not Omar Abdullah? What is happening in the country this time is reason enough for Omar Abdullah not to speak of corruption in the lighter vein? There is no doubt that the Chief Minister has personally been a crusader against corruption, but that campaign has not moved forward beyond personal integrity and righteousness. How can Omar Abdullah stand on a high pedestal and tell Mufti that he must begin the war against corruption from his home. Is it not necessary for Omar Abdullah also to begin the war against corruption from his home as well? One cannot, but wonder at the wisdom of the Chief Minister's advisors. They are giving such worthless advice to the boss that he would be a million times better off without them. With friends like that does Omar Abdullah still need any enemies? In private some of the Chief Minister's advisors have been saying that he does not pay heed to their advice. If that is the truth than why shouldn't the advisors resign their positions? If the service they have been engaged to discharge is not needed and if their services are of no use to the state government because their word goes unnoticed then they have a moral obligation to step down. If they maintain that the Chief Minister listens to them and acts on their advice then the mess the state is in presently directly owes itself to the advice of these advisors. That makes for a valid reason the Chief Minister must axe his advisors. Otherwise, Omar Abdullah would always make speeches asking Mufti Syed to begin the war against corruption from home. Is Mufti the Anna Hazare of Jammu and Kashmir? Perhaps Omar knows the answer. |
