What is cooking up by the way? | Changing US Kashmir policy | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 19 : Much to the discomfort of the separatists, there has been a visible shift in US Kashmir policy since March. Two important persons from US have visited Srinagar during the past five months. This has never happened before. Significantly both of them have refused to meet the separatists. On March 17, the US Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer visited Srinagar. He called on the Chief Minister and stated that he (CM) was the elected representative of the people of Jammu Kashmir. He had no time for the separatists. However, he spent around two hours playing basket ball with the boys in Delhi Public School (DPS) Athwajan. This was Roemer's second visit to Kashmir in six months. A US senator visited Srinagar this week. He too ignored the separatists. The influential US Senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain Tuesday held discussions with Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on the prevailing political and economic situation in the State. Surprisingly immediately after his arrival in the summer capital in a special US plane, he drove straight to Raj Bhawan. The members of the US delegation Christian Brose, Foreign Policy Advisor; Vance Serchuk, Foreign Policy Advisor, HSGAC and Lt. Lawrence Heyworth, USN, Military Escort accompanied him to Raj Bhawan. And what made the meeting important was the presence of Lt Gen K T Parnaik, Northern Army Commander, and Lt Gen S A Hasnain GoC 15 Corps. Earlier this month the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Ghulam Nabi Fai on charges of receiving funding from Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Fai, it may be mentioned, has always been in good books of the US state department. In fact the department facilitated his conferences. Influential people from the state have been attending his conferences. Fai has been enlarged on bail but has been directed to stay confined to his house. His arrest has been perceived as a major blow to separatists. |
