Not only corrupt Babus; even self-acclaimed honest earn 'booty', live luxurious life | Loot of state exchequer in J&K | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 20: Jammu and Kashmir has the unique distinction of being the only state in the country where not only corrupt officers are living luxurious life but even self-acclaimed honest ones have built palatial bungalows and have accounts on different names in several banks of the state and outside. These honest officers do not have a penny on their name but have money swelling in the accounts of their wives, sons and daughters. Children of a good number of self-acclaimed honest officers have managed admission in private medical and engineering colleges both within and outside the state. Son of an honest IAS officer recently got admitted to a costly private college outside the state. Informed sources said that the college charges Rs. 15 to 25 Lakh as donation while fee ranges between Rs. 1.5 to 2.25 lakh per year. They asserted that another self-acclaimed IAS officer who also headed Jammu Municipality for some time has a palatial bungalow in Gandhinagar while his three children possess three cars, with cost of each car ranging between Rs. 5.45 lakh to Rs. 9 Lakh. Sources affirmed that the said officer is regarded as scrupulously honest. They maintained that while people have agitating against the government and seeking removal of corrupt officers, it has preferred overlooking the wealth that the self-acclaimed IAS officers have been making from the unknown sources. IFS officers have the distinction of being the only ones against whom innumerable cases of corruption are pending and yet they have been enjoying prized postings. In another instance of brazen loot of the state exchequer, around 600 officers who have been booked in various cases of corruption by state vigilance organization have all been reinstated. While in several important cases, sanction for prosecution is awaited from the government. An official of SVO said that at despite accord of sanction for prosecution and recommendation for termination of services of many top officials by state agencies and independent commissions, Jammu and Kashmir government continues to delay action in several corruption cases. Sources told Early Times that more than 400 cases of corruption including embezzlement of funds and misuse of official position involving some ministers and top bureaucrats are pending in the State Accountability Commission. "In some cases the Commission had recommended severe action to the extent of termination of services of accused officials. But the recommendations were never implemented due to strong political interference," sources said. Jammu and Kashmir government has gone on record to state that more than 400 cases of corruption had been registered against various person including former ministers, bureaucrats and other Gazetted and non-Gazetted officials. The charges range from corruption to misappropriation of funds, misuse of official position. The names of some legislators, IAS, IPS, IFS and KAS officials, heads of departments and officials of various universities had also figured in the cases. However there has been either slow progress to probe the cases or the recommendations by the independent agencies and Commissions against the accused involved in the cases are not acted upon by the government. |
