Rich tributes paid to Rajiv Gandhi | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 20: Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla today said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi took some revolutionary steps to promote science technology and associated industries by reducing import quotas, taxes and tariffs on technology-based industries, especially computers, airlines, defence and telecommunications. Minister was addressing a largely attended function convened to pay tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 67th birth anniversary here at Shastri Nagar. MLA Indu Pawar besides people in large numbers were present on the occasion and paid floral tributes to the former PM. Bhalla said that it was Rajiv Gandhi who improved bilateral relations with the United States and expanded economic and scientific cooperation. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi announced a national education policy to modernize and expand higher education programs across the country. He founded the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya System in 1986 a Central government run chain of educational institutions set up for the upliftment of the rural society by providing them free residential education from 6th till 12 grade. His efforts created MTNL and his public call offices, better known as PCOs and helped spread telephones in peripheries of rural and urban pockets. Describing tourism sector as a major potential area for state's economic growth, he said that in view of the ever increasing rush of pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, Shri Amarnath Shrine and Shri Budha Amarnath ji Shrine, a number of tourist circuits has been created for boosting the tourism in the State. He reiterated the government's commitment of working for the emancipation of SC, ST and other backward classes besides handicapped and under-privileged populace of the state. Responding to the demands put forth by the Marh block flood hit families, Bhalla informed that instructions have been issued to Revenue Officers to prepare lists of losses of public and private properties and submit the same within 15 days so that the relief under National Calamity Relief Fund could be disbursed among them. He said Government has earmarked Rs. 10 crore for restoration of damages and distribution of relief among the affected families of the Jammu division. Gandhi Global Family organised a simple but impressive function to mark birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi here at City Palace, The function was attended by office bearers and members of Gandhi Global Family who highlighted the policies and programmes launched by former Prime Minister for strengthening of the country. State President, Gandhi Global Family, S. P. Verma while addressing the gathering said that Rajiv Gandhi created employment avenues for the youths within and outside country in the field of Information Technology. He appealed to the Government to explore the possibilities to provide jobs to the unemployed youth in Government, PSUs and private sector to fulfill the dreams of Late leader. The 67th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was celebrated. by the Congress party through out the state by organizing several functions. 'The main function was held by the PCC at the Congress HQ Shaheedi Chowk Jammu. The function was presided over by the senior vice president of PCC and former MP Dharam Pal Sharma and attended by senior leaders of PCC and frontal organizations of the party. The speakers recalled the contributions of the Rajiv Gandhi and asked party men to follow his ideals. The speakers remembered his great contributions in bringing Panchayat Raj system in the country lowering the voting age from 21 years to 18 years to ensure that young voters Participate in electoral systems and determine the future of the Country and his vision to make Country leader in the system in the state is also fully empowered on the pattern of 73rd & 74tb amendments of the Constitution ensuring due representation to women & other classes of people at all levels in these institution of democracy. RS Chib, Minister for YSS, Medical & Technical Education in his address remembered the achievements of Late Rajiv Gandhi in various spheres during his short stint in politics. He referred to his efforts to achieve peace in various parts of the country during his period through dialogue and settled various issues and situations confronting the country. He was a message of peace & harmony, he added.
