State Govt likely to take Uri Project back from NHPC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 21 (KNS): The state government will approach NHPC for the return of Uri Hydro Power Project soon and in this regard Power Development Corporation authorities have been asked by the government to formulate a proposal in this regard. According to 1985 agreement the government can claim back the Uri Project from NHPC after paying the amount which was spent on its construction. The present value of the Project has been estimated at Rs 2100 crore. Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din told KNS that he proposed in cabinet sub committee on return of power projects that J&K government should pay NHPC money and take back the rights of Uri Project. “I proposed in cabinet sub committee that we should ask the NHPC to return Uri Project back to us. We will pay the NHPC the cost of construction of the project in two installments. As we will be getting Rs 948 crores from the NHPC as royalty for usage of our resources, we will be able to pay back the money in just two years,” he told KNS. Besides Taj, Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, Rural Development and Panchyati Raj Minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar and Tourism Minister Nwang Rigzin Jora are other members of the cabinet sub committee which has been formed by the state government to get back the power projects from NHPC. A civil society group had recently approached the High Court seeking its intervention for return of 790 MW-Salal power project from the NHPC. Taj told KNS that government had sent a letter to the NHPC asking it to provide records of the project so that formalities can be finalized. However, the NHPC hasn’t replied yet. “We are waiting for HC decision and then only we can taken any further step,” he added. As per the 1985 cabinet order, Jammu and Kashmir was entitled to 50 percent of power generated from the project besides 50 percent share on the returns over selling of remaining power by NHPC. The ownership of the project was to be reverted to the state government after a suitable period on payment of depreciated cost. However the order was never implemented. |
