4000 school teachers to create awareness about AIDS menace | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 21: Although the Sex education has not been introduced in Jammu and Kashmir, State AIDS control society has trained about 4,000 school teachers to create awareness among the children about the deadly disease, which has shown a constant rise in recent years. According to officials associated with the project about two teachers in 2000 high and higher secondary schools across the state have been trained during past three years since the program was launched in Jammu and Kashmir. The state has 1,410 cases of HIV/AIDS and 280 cases have been detected during the first six-months of the current year, which has sent the officials in a tizzy.
When contacted a senior officer from the health department said that this is apart from religious advocacy programme under which 840 Imam's and 500 Granthis have been trained.
“Apart from this about 17000 workers of social welfare department, 2400 Surpanches and Panchas have also been trained so far who would work as ambassadors for convening the messages in their respective areas”, he said.
Director said that as per the survey conducted by the society AIDS graph has shown reduction of 0.3 percent in high risk groups and 0.02 percent in general population in the state.
He said that in anti-natal category (pregnant women) the prevalence rate has dropped to zero from 0.06 per cent in 2006.
“Though Jammu and Kashmir lies in the low prevalence zone, it does not mean that the threat of HIV/AIDS is any less here but we are making constant efforts to slow down the infection rate,” said a official.
However official sources admitted that despite constant endeavors of the State AIDS Prevention and Control Society, HIV infection continues to spread its tentacles in the state mainly due to drug use, high risk group like truck drivers and sexual exploitation by the militants in Kashmir valley.
The state has eight voluntary counseling and testing centers, four each in Jammu and Srinagar while 22 blood banks across the state have been modernized to ensure safe blood transfusion.
However, various studies say the state today has nearly 30,000 HIV positive carriers and disorganized commercial sex besides ever-increasing number of intravenous drug users continue to aggravate the problem.
