Gandhi opposes Anna's methodology | India Against Corruption | | Rustam JAMMU, Aug 21 : Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, yesterday opposed the methodology employed by Anna Hazare to force the adamant, arrogant and essentially dictatorial Congress-led UPA Government to adopt the Jan Lokpal Bill by the end of this month. Anna started fast unto death on August 16 declaring his fast would continue till he achieves his stated goal. Anna and his team feel that the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by them can go a long way in tackling the menace of corruption, which has adversely impacted all walks of life. He and his team members are right. The methodology they have adopted is also appropriate considering the nature of those who have been misruling India and exploiting Indians since 1947. There are negative forces in the country who have upped their ante against Anna and his team with a view to defeating the movement unleashed by Anna - movement that has evoked tremendous response from the people across the country, including the oppressed, suppressed and exploited people of Jammu. One of the persons who have opposed Anna's methodology, as mentioned earlier, is Tushar Gandhi. He has said the Anna's movement could not be compared with the movements Mahatma Gandhi launched from time to time to win freedom from the British. He has even ridiculed those millions of Indians who have joined the movement with great enthusiasm. He has said that the purpose of Anna and his followers is only to denounce the Union Government and that it is not a movement; it is a muqabala between Anna and the Union Government - muqabala in which one party would lose and the other would win. He said Mahatma Gandhi never believed in such muqablas. Tushar is right. Mahatma Gandhi did launch three main movements - Non-Cooperation Movement (1921-1922), Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1931 & 1932-1934) and Quit India Movement (1942) to achieve political redemption, but he did not bring any movement to its logical conclusion. He unilaterally withdrew the Non-Cooperation movement in February 1922 and at a time when the mobilized and dedicated Indians had brought the British Government to their knees. Had he not withdrawn the movement then, India would have won freedom in 1922 itself. His action had evoked a very strong reaction from the Congress leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, who said: "Gandhi has gone eccentric." Similarly, he suspended the Civil Disobedience movement in 1931 after getting vague assurances from the British. He restarted the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1932, which continued till 1934 but nothing came out of it. The British Government neither granted genuine autonomy to the provinces nor did it establish a responsible form of government in the country. And, he withdrew the movement at a time when the committed Indians had already made supreme sacrifices for the national cause. Gandhi's action left everyone in the country aghast. Reflecting on the Mahatma's action, a senior Congress leader remarked "this is the way the world ends not with bang but with a whimper." During the Second World War, Gandhi made a strange declaration and his declaration was that he did not want India's independence on the ruins of the British Empire. He opposed everyone, including Subhas Chandra Bose who was of the view that the Second World War was the god-sent opportunity to strike and win freedom from the British. This was the third occasion when Mahatma Gandhi failed to rise to the occasion, thus virtually allowing the British to rule and exploit India for some more time. Earlier in 1927, he had opposed Subbhas Bose's snap independence resolution - resolution he moved in the Madras Congress session. As for Subhas, he left the Congress because he felt that there was no place for him in the Gandhi's scheme of things. He founded Forward Block and fought splendidly for the freedom of the country. In August 1942, Mahtama Gandhi started Quit India Movement. The movement virtually collapsed, notwithstanding the fact that the people's participation was massive and spontaneous. They also sacrificed all that they could for the cause, but they were badly let down. India did win freedom in August 1947 but not because Mahatma Gandhi or the Congress had done anything but because the Second World War had left the Britons with no other option but to quit India and hand over power to the Congress. It would be only appropriate to say that the Congress party is not just corrupt to the core but it is also the mother of all ills afflicting the people of India. Compare Mahatma Gandhi with Anna and you will see the difference for yourself. Anna has launched several movements and won all of them. He never relented. There are reasons to believe that Anna would not relent even now come what may and it is this attitude of Anna that has irritated Tushar Gandhi. Tushar Gandhi's views on the Anna's methodology need to be viewed in this context. He is, it appears, feeling jealous of Anna. It is time for all the countrymen to make common cause with Anna so that the corrupt are thrown out lock, stock and barrel and India attains a position in the comity of nations. The movement of Anna can be legitimately described as the second freedom struggle and, hence, the need for the nation's participation in it. |
