Fourth estate is also in chains, Mr Padgoanker | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir have sought release of all militants` as a good will gesture' but failed to utter a word in favour of fourth estate. This speaks in volumes about love of interlocutors for militants. During one of their visits to Srinagar, interlocutors interacted with a delegation of Kashmir Editor's Association. The delegation led by editor CNS, Rashid Rahi discussed in detail discriminatory policy of government towards some newspapers. "The Interlocutors were told that some newspapers were on the black list of the government and survived without government advertisements. We also apprised them on attacks on journalists by the men in uniform" Rahi said the Interlocutors assured appropriate action into the matter. However, Rahi expressed dismay over Padgoanker's failure to raise the issue with the Union Home Minister yesterday. Rahi said suppression of media by various means contributed to unrest. "By curtailing the freedom of press, the government conveys in clear terms that it had no regard for democratic rights and institutions", he said. Rahi urged the Interlocutors to make special recommendations about freedom of media in the state. Freeing fourth estate from chains will do wonders with thinking of the people. And that is exactly what the interlocutors have been appointed for. Therefore, they are bound to recommend measures for freedom of the Press. Pertinent to mention the media persons were attacked as many as twenty-five times since June 2010. One of them was even shot at. He was lucky to survive. Not only this, the government has stopped advertisements to various newspapers for highlighting the aspirations of the people. |
