64th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDEPENDENT INDIA
KHUSHWANT S RANIAL8/23/2011 9:29:52 PM

This year on the 15th of August 2011 ,we the people of India celebrated 64th birth anniversary of the independence .Hats off to them who strived for our freedom by sacrificing their own precious lives for their coming generations so that we all live in peace ,without any body’s fear, pressure ,struggle unhindered and also get rewarded for the growth and development of both the state and society and above all strive for excellence in different spheres of life .The freedom fighters shed their sweat ,blood and bore all type of ordeals to make our future safe and secure .If we start counting the numbers of those who sacrificed their lives by gaining martyrdom for our nation in making us free from the yoke of the tyrannical foreign rulers and (their selective henchmen over here who betrayed us by succumbing to the Britishers for their own monetary gains) ,it goes beyond count though only few selective are remembered for being emerged as the mass leader to lead the national struggle from the front . Anyhow, one can take pride in, to be a part of this country where democracy and secularism ushers to make one think liberally and enjoy the privileges enshrined in the constitution without any prejudices etc. unlike our counterpart and neighboured Pakistan, where till date they have not come out of the rut of the feudalistic atmosphere so far, thus making the lives of the common masses over there much more deplorable and agonising. Comparatively, there stands no yardstick to measure the success rate of two neighbouring nations emerging out of single entity, in terms of attaining the progress, prosperity, tranquillity, growth and development in the different spheres of the life owing to separate system of the governance but despite all that India’s success rate in the path of development have been stupendous and acknowledgeable. Despite having made good strides, we still have number of challenges to deal with firmly like banishing poverty , reducing illiteracy ,improving healthcare services ,to check ever increasing inflation ,generate more employment opportunities, empowering women ,strengthening the panchayat raj system for the development of the local areas ,drafting and executing the stronger land acquisitions law , countering firmly the terrorism and Naxalism ,checking trans-border smuggling of gold ,heroine ,drugs ,counterfeit currency ,narcotics and above all the most deadly weapons etc. There is no doubt that our government has always shown seriousness in tackling many such allied issues of rich importance afflicting the progress of the nation but what is shocking is that those who had /have been entrusted with the task of bringing the wrong doers to book instead of doing so, themselves maligned their own image and became part of those who hold the ulterior motives, thus jeopardising the future of the nation and putting its security at stake of ransom. Where such strength is swallowing day in and day out, can one hope of any miracle to stem the rot .If any one dares to raise his concern or shows dissent for the unchecked vitiated social milieu, he or she is branded to be corrupt rather than self introspection of the personal character. Even our Prime Minister had stated in his address to nation from the red fort on 15th August 2011, that in the last few months many instances of corruption have come to light in which functionaries of Central / State government faced allegations of corruption for pocketing the funds earmarked for the schemes of the welfare of the common man. Notably, he also mentioned about government contracts wrongfully awarded to the wrong people and thus to deal with issue, endeavours have been sought to improve delivery justice system .He also told that his government had constituted committee to suggest measures to reduce corruption in the government purchases whereas constituted committee has recommended to have public procurement legislation to lay down principles and practice with regard to the government purchases and introduction of a bill in parliament for its enactment by the end of this year shall definitely take place . Apart he also told that government is going to enact a law to monitor the working of the independent regulatory authorities, without intruding into their privacies, which were earlier in the domain of the government itself. What is desired the most is the enactment of the land acquisition law to protect the land of owners and farmers? The incidents that happened at Singur ,Greater Noida , Bhatta Parasul ,Jaitipur ,Mansa etc. should not be allowed to happen again. In India ,everyone is equal and born free. Farmers having the land is generally the only source of earning and a status symbol and once it is snatched forcibly then any monetary value lend to a farmer in lieu of the acquisition cannot cover that self respect. Rather such acts promote animosity between the sufferer and the government. A single spark arisen due to the highhandedness of the policeman ignited like Jasmine revolution which begun from the Tunisia but changed the whole scenario in whole of the Arab nations by overthrowing the most established autocratic regimes .Likewise very recently ,the London riots which broke out on the 6th of August 2011 over the killing of an Afro –Caribbean Mark Duggan in police shootout at Tottenham and then violence spreading across the cities of Liverpool, Bristol, Salford ,Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham in which property worth million dollar gutted and loss of couple of lives and injuries to both the rioters and police took place is a grim reminder to the government about the unavoidable and inevitable collapse likely to emanate provided our government does not address to the issue of corruption in the Modern India in the near future. The newly originated modes of information technology like Twitter, Face book, Internet, SMS etc. have made the public more interconnected and made aware of their basic rights through common sharing of the evolved ideas and any deviance by the government from raised demands can set the dry straw to fire beyond repairs. Our government must act now to the call of the public under the banner of Anna Hazare to strike at the malpractices and spreading of the corruption in the civil life make difficult to even breathe freely .In London riots, as per the sociologists analysis not only economically hard hit elements have participated in spreading the reign of terror but the majority of rioters consisted of such people who have been the victims of social deprivation and despair. Remember the wind of Anna Hazare if not properly blocked by finding out any amicable solution pertaining the formation and implementation of a strong Lok Pal bill to curb the menace of corruption ,days are not far off that social unrest would spread across the whole India causing irreparable loss. So better it would be on the part of the government, to not adopt the delayed tactics and set in motion it’s all options open to understand the need of the hour. The sooner the redresser, the far better it would be for all of us.
