Kishtwar, Aug 22: Top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant Ajaiz Ahmad Sheikh alias Salim Javed allegedly stayed in his relative's house at Marwah Colony in the town here for three years but police could not find him.
The colony falls within the Kishtwar municipal committee limits and is about 2 km from the police station.
In its August 3 edition, Early Times had carried a detailed report on the militant activities of Javed who was also alleged to be an accused in the killing of 12th class student Nasir Ahmed Wani, son of Bhudur Wani of Nowgham, Marwah.
He remained an active militant for more than 10 years before his arrest by army on September 14, 2008. One AK riffle, 30 AK rounds and one magazine were then recovered from him.
On September 17, 2008, he was produced by police before first class magistrate, Marwah, who had sent him to 10 days police remand.
He was then said to be have been shifted in a helicopter to Kishtwar from where he had allegedly disappeared under mysterious circumstances even as FIR No 2 of 2008 under section 302 of RPC was registered against him at Marwah police station for his alleged involvement in the Wani's killing.
Quoting local inputs, official sources said after his "disappearance", Javed had allegedly been staying at Marwah Colony in the house of his close relative, a retired RDD employee.
However, after the August 3 ET story on him, a departmental inquiry was stated to have been initiated to find out the truth. Sources said he was an absconder in police records.
Murtaza, said to be Javed's brother, however, denied reports that he was an absconder. It would be better if media contacted police for details of the case, he added.
When this correspondent went to his uncle's house at Marwah Colony and spoke to his family members, they parried the queries. Their behaviour, however, only vindicated the August 3 ET story.
