Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 23: The Jammu based political parties have failed to clear their stand on Afzal Guru mastermind of Parliament attack in 2002 who has been convicted by the Supreme Court of India and is facing the death sentence. Though separatists and mainstream political parties in Kashmir are strongly pleading for his pardon and have petitioned before the president of India seeking mercy for Guru in view of its impact on sensitive situation in Kashmir, the political parties in Jammu have chosen to maintain a silence on the issue.
In Jammu except VHP, Shiv Sena and Kranti Dal no other party supported that the dreaded terrorist be punished as per the Apex Court verdict as he was involved in waging a war against the nation by attacking the Parliament the highest temple of Indian democracy. It is unfortunate that the BJP at national level has strongly advocated for carrying out death sentence as ordered by Supreme Court and opposed to grant of mercy to Guru but the state leadership of the Party is tight lipped over this issue. This stoic silence maintained by BJP has generated a lot of resentment among the people in Jammu region who accuse the party of adopting double standards.
Ramesh Kumar of Jourian while commenting on the role of Jammu parties said the silence maintained by BJP and other parties including NPP and Jammu State Morcha (JSM) on Guru's issue is unfortunate. They know that the people in J&K have been worst sufferers of terrorism for over 22 years and hundreds of innocent people lost their lives over this period. The school going children were not spared by terrorists who even attacked the matadors and buses carrying the children, he added.
The BJP which claims to have Roysed the vice against crushing the terrorists with iron hands seems have adopted double standards over the issue of Afzal Guru, he said. To please the NC leadership in the state to which BJP is hand in glove the Party has chosen to play safe and not to press for his hanging as it does not want to annoy the NC leadership in the state and strain its relations with it, he added.
He said on the other hand the party at national level is forcefully advocating for carrying out capital punishment to Guru in view of the public opinion. This way the BJP has been exposed before the masses as the Party to keep its hidden relations with NC intact to seek some concessions from the Government are not going to issue any statement which is not liked by the later, he added.
Making a dig at the NPP and JSM leaders also Rama Kant a social activist from Samba said that the two parties have also failed to take up the issue. Supporting that dreaded terrorist be put to gallows he said the leadership of the two parties who claim to champion the cause of Jammu should make their stand clear on Guru's issue as the common man in the country is fed up with terrorism and wants that Guru be punished for the heinous crime which he and his other associates did.
Had the alert security forces taken in time action and countered the terrorists who had entered the Parliament premises the Indian democracy would have suffered a great jolt and something very unfortunate would have happened, he said. While Kashmiri leadership is clear in their stand the leaders of some main political parties in Jammu are playing double standards, he added.
He while referring to statements of Kashmiri based leaders said that a campaign has been launched by them to save Guru knowing fully the heinous crime committed by him is unpardonable. But still they continue their efforts to save him while the political parties in Jammu are divided on the issue, he added.
