Centre and NABARD to finance cold store projects in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPOT Jammu, Aug 24: Under a multi-crore centrally sponsored scheme the state Government has decided to set up 2000 metric tonnes capacity cold store for preventing huge loss to fresh fruit. Government circles said that setting up 200 metric tonnes capacity cold store in Kashmir was part of the main project which envisages setting up cold stores at other places in Jammu and Kashmir. Once the first project proved fruitful it will be extended to other locations depending on the need. These official circles said that setting up chain cold stores were being financed by the Government of India and by the NABARD. For implementing various schemes in the Department of Horticulture the state Government has decided to engage consultants or a consulting agency that would for the projects, design the establishment, const ruction and setting up of cold stores. The agency will be entrusted with the task of setting up pack houses formulate commodity, horticulture crops and develop other post harvest management facilities. The Department of Horticulture has decided that the consultants were being told to carry out in the first place a detailed survey before finalizing the site for cold stores. Officials of the Horticulture Department said that the state Government has decided to lay emphasis on fruit production as it was going to be a major backbone, after tourism, of the state's economy. They said at present fruit worth Rs.350 crores per year and efforts were on for increasing the export level to Rs.500 crores per year.(KIP)
