BANGALORE, August 24: A three member delegation of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on Chief Minister Karnataka Sadhanand Gowda and discussed with him functioning of Panchayati Raj system in his State.
The delegation comprised of three legislators of the party included Nizam ud Din Bhat, Choudhary Zulfikar and Basharat Bukhari. PDP delegation visited Karnataka on the directions of the party leadership to review successful functioning of Panchayati Raj system in that state.
During their meeting with Karnataka Chief Minister, PDP delegation discussed various aspects of the Panchayati Raj System in that State. They thoroughly discussed how Panchayats were empowered in Karnataka and how this institution has been strengthening with every passing year. Chief Minister Sadhanand Gowda replied all queries raised by the visiting delegation of PDP leaders.
Panchayat Raj (Rule of Village Committee) system is a three-tier system in the state with elected bodies at the Village, Taluk and District levels. It ensures greater participation of people and more effective implementation of rural development programmes. There will be a Grama Panchayat for a village or group of villages, a Taluk level and the Zilla Panchayat at the district level.
All the three institutions will have elected representatives and there is no provision for nomination by the Government to any of these councils. Karnataka is the first in the country to enact new Panchayat Raj Act.
