SAMC expresses shock over beating of photojournalists | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, August 24 (KNS) : The South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) has expressed shock over the treatment given to the photo journalists in Srinagar during the discharge of their professional duties on August 19. “It fully shares the concern voiced by the Kashmir Photojournalists Association and, demands deterrent action against the police personnel responsible for harassing media persons. From all accounts, it was a case of deliberate disregard of the elementary norms of dealing with media persons and not an action based on ‘mistaken identity”, as was later stated in a cover-up bid,” a SAMC statement said. “Particularly disturbing was the way the photo journalists were chased, beaten up and detained for several hours. Their only ‘crime’ was that they were covering clashes between the police and a group of protestors. The delinquent police men seemed conscious of the immunity they thought they enjoyed in preventing publicity of the ugly incidents,” it added. The SAMC asked authorities to realize that such an attitude would prove counter-productive and give a bad name to the administration. “It is not hard to realize the consequences if the Photojournalists Association feels compelled to go ahead with its plan for protests at the international level,” it said. “The matter is too serious to be left to be dealt with by the local authorities. It is a case for intervention by the Governor and the Chief Minister — on the one hand, for suitable action against erring police officials and, on the other, for laying down clear guidelines for the police and other authorities in dealing with media persons. Last week’s incident is too shocking to be brushed under the carpet,” the statement added.
