Farooq's sincere sermon to separatists
8/24/2011 10:53:00 PM
If the separatists are wise, they are, they should heed the latest musings from the union Minister and President National Conference,Dr Farooq Abdullah, who has expressed deep displeasure over the plan of har dliners, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani,on stating an agitation in Kashmir against the continued detention of political leaders and those arrested on charge of indulging in stone pelting.Farooq has advised Geelani and his associates against starting protest demonstrations and strikes not because he feels scared of them but he does not want to see Kashmir, once again,on fire.He candidly conveyed to Geelani that in case he tries to put Kashmir on fire by his protest demonstrations and shutdowns he(Geelani) would get consumed in that fire.Farooq Abdullah, who has a cosy place in Delhi, has no reason to feel alarmed by the separatists' plan but he is worried about Kashmir and people of Kashmir because whatever experience he has gained in the past has taught him that unrest or civilian strife ruins Kashmir. It wrecks tourist traffic to Kashmir.
And again Farooq is right when he has stated that Kashmir has no industry and the only industry in Kashmir is the Dal Lake which continues to be frequented by tourists. He has advised Geelani not to do anything that will wreck the tourism industry.Farooq is right when he says that one bumper tourist season,as people have witnessed during the current summer,is not enough to indicate that peace has returned to the state. He also wants tourist traffic to Kashmir remain unhindered and uninterrupted because that alone could bring people of the state out of poverty.Well Geelani's demand for release of all detainees cannot be treated with disdain. But being a seasoned political leader and equally a seasoned teacher he should know that if people have been arrested or detained they have been placed behind bars on charge of destabilising peace. The issue be left to the courts to decide and it would be better for people like Geelani to mount pressure on the Government for constituting special courts for hearing cases of the detainees on fast track basis.
During the last over 21 years Jammu and Kashmir state has been left bleeding because of the Pakistan sponsored militancy.Over 40,000 civilians have lost their lives, several thousand security personnel were killed by the militants, several thousand women were rendered widows and an equal number of kids left orphans and destitutes. Are people like Geelani still not satisfied with the level of death and destruction in the state. If they had started the armed campaign for securing either freedom for Kashmir or for its incorporation with Pakistan their campaign has failed to yield any results. It will be better for these separatists to leave the Kashmir issue to India and Pakistan to settle. The Indo-Pak talks, despite hicuups, have been resumed. It is the duty of the separatists to help the two sides to sort out the conflict instead of creating added problems for the two count ries.
