Unmarked graves a national shame: Mehbooba | PDP calls for visible action on SHRC investigation | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 25: PDP today called for visible and concrete action on the reports of the unmarked graves in many parts of the state. The party held a demonstration here today to press for the identification of the unknown martyrs who have been buried in these graves, which according to SHRC report count more than 2100. The party also called for punitive action against the culprits of these mass murders. A large number of PDP workers and sympathizers led by party president Mehbooba Mufti took out a procession from its headquarters and went through the main city street of Srinagar. The procession was intercepted by police near regal chowk where president accompanied by senior party leaders and legislators sat on a Dharna to press for its demands for ending official repression. Senior party leader Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, general secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir, former minister Qazi mohd Afzal, Deputy speaker Mohd Sartaj Madani, MLAs AR Veeri, Rafi Ahmed Mir, Peerzada Mansoor, Mohd Khalil Band, Syed Bashir Ahmad, Zahoor Ahmad Mir and Mushtaq Ahmed Shah also sat on the dharna along with party president. Speaking on the occasion Mehbooba Mufti said, it was an irony that the country’s political parties, establishment and civil society had almost abandoned Kashmir and the plight of its residents. It was obvious from lack of any reaction to the detection of mass graves that Kashmir is not only a cause for concern but is ignored even when something of the proportions of a national shame has taken place here, she said. She said, at a time when millions of people across the country have mobilized themselves into an effective anti-corruption campaign, Kashmir is presenting a challenge to the conscience and idea of India; not evoking a single voice of concern and solidarity. Mehbooba asserted that because of the uncertain condition in Kashmir, corruption here has been promoted as a state policy along with official repression and J&K is the worst victim of the loot of public money. But, in a state like ours, where the very survival is threatened concerns for life and dignity subsume all other issue including corruption. She said that the people of the state were feeling abandoned and unwanted as even after thousands of deaths mainly unaccounted, there is hardly any significant move to resolve the issue except through increasing level of official apathy. This, she apprehended, could once again lead to a radicalization of thought among the youth. She said unmarked graves are not a thing of distant past but such killings are still taking place as is evident from recent incidents in Sopore, Surankote and Jammu. Terming the government announcement of releasing a dozen political prisoners on the eve of Eid as a cosmetic exercise, she said that the bulk of political detainees and youth are still behind the bars for none of their fault. She said that the govt. will try to present the release of a dozen detainees as a great relief and concession; people like the octogenarian Mohd Ashraf Sehrai and ailing Ghulam Nabi Sumji should not be in the jail in the first place in any democratic society. Qazi Yasir was very thoughtlessly released for few hours over the demise of his uncle and then re arrested. “What is the rationale of such dictatorial actions unless it is to convey to the people of the state a strong message of denial of the fundamental rights,” she wondered. Mehbooba said, PDP would not rest till all the political prisoners, detainees and the youth are released from jails and all the cases against them withdrawn. She said that the party would continue to agitate these issues in a forceful manner and use the democratic space in every forum to dismantle the system of official repression. She said government has jeopardized the careers of more than five thousand youth by lodging FIRs against them which must be scrapped. Earlier, addressing the party workers and members at the party headquarters she termed the present government a complete failure in protecting the rights, dignity and life of the people. Expressing solidarity with the media fraternity she said that the present government has given a complete freedom to security personals to muzzle the voice of people. “The media persons are ruthlessly beaten by the cops, & this is now a routine. Media professional are being prevented from carrying out their duties. She said, “There nobody is safe. We are demanding the assurance of the safety of citizens of the state.” Addressing the rally senior leader Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari said that the PDP’s agenda is clear as we want the forces back into barracks after having performed their jobs and all the draconian laws should be rolled back. He said Kashmir is a political issue and not a law and order problem. The party will push for Indo-Pak friendship to create a space for resolution of Kashmir problem. The district presidents including Peer Hussain, Javiad Hussian Beigh, Ghulam Mohiudin Mir, Nazir Ahmad Laway, Saif-ud-Din Bhat , Yasir Reshi , Nazir Ahmed yatoo, Showkat Gayoor,Nisar Ahmed Mandoo, Jehangir Wani and Ashok Bhat were also present in the dharna.
